According to reports the valua tion of St. Johns property is double what it was a year ago on the books of the assessor. The Hood River fruit fair held last week was n great success, the exhibits being larger and finer than ever before. A remarkably complete stock of drugs, patent medicines, stationery and sundries will be found at the St. Johns Pharmacy. The contract for the McDonald block on Jersey street has been let to Contractor W. C. Adams, who will begin the work at once. A special car said to contain mem bcrs of the great banking firm of Seligmau & Co. of New York, passed through the city yesterday. The St. Johns Grocery Co. has ustalled a new furnace in their store. As they now have over 5, 000 square feet of floor space it will keep the furnace busy 011 n cold lay. The St. Johns Grocery Co. has cased the middle store room in the Holbrook block ou Jersey street and will use it for their furniture and stove department. A fine line of goals has been ordered to beshipped at once. W. C, Adams, the contractor and builder, has leased the Woodhouse property ou RurliiiKtoii Place, ad joining the Cochran block, and will at once begin the erection of several stores. Lutulcr and brick nre now Iwing delivered. The location is one of the most central in the city. The necessity of establishing a rcgrade of "llurlington street over the hill to the river is apparent to all who have traveled over the nud since the heavy rains. In its pres ent condition it is neither safe for a loaded team to attempt to climb or descend the hill. Gold and copper are reported to have been discovered in the region of Trout Lake, twenty miles north of White Salmon, Wash. Many specimens of ore have been brought in by prospectors which is said to assay $300 to the ton. A large number of gold seekers are on the ground and many others are on their way thither. Last Sunday morning's papers had Drayman Billy Stevens laid up in a Portland hospital with a frac tured skull on account of a fall from an ingoing car Saturday night. The rugged drayman was thrown to the ground by the violent lurching of the car while turning a curve en route to Portland Saturday night Outside of disfiguring the real es tate along the right of way no ma terial damage was done. Ten dollars down and ten cents a day are the terms on which Univer sity Park lots are sold. University Park lots are selling right along while others btand still, because University Park has the largest payroll on the peninsula, be cause it has Bull Run water, a university which brings a cultured class, a liquor restriction which ex cludes saloons, Portland public schools, and first and foremost it believes that a steady growth and good morals pay best in the long run. All are invited, A quiet wedding took place at the home of ISugeue Phillips ou Mo hawk street, St. Johns, last Mon day at 5:30 p. in., when William II. K. Phillips of Greenville. Now if the P. S. company saves its business it will have to place its antiquated out-of- date system with something more modern.
