Will lie in Orcration in North St.
Johns in Less Than a Year.
It is now a fuel beyond pcradven
Hire that one oi the largest smelt
ing establishments in the world
wilt locate on the site secured for
that purpose on the Willamette
opposite Mtiutou. The Wnshottgal
Gold & Copper Company,, now op
erating on the Wnshougal river,
have decided to establish the plant
here, and have given the assurance
that it will be running in full bl.ist
before September t, 1907. About
400 or 500 men will be employed by
that time, who will receive big
wages.
The company's mines have been
put in shape to produce an output
of 500 tons of ore dally. This ore
will be shipped to the peninsula for
smelting. A large1 quantity of ore
will also be shipped from Alaska.
The stockholders who are nearly
all eastern capitalists, are enthusi
astic over the proseet, and are sat
isfied that they have one of the
greatest copper urines in the coun
try. They my they are toady and
willing to spend huiidteds of thou
sands of dollars in the enterprise if
necessary.
V. A. Mabee of St. I.ouis is ines-
ideiit of the company, and lie in
company witli a wore or mote of
the capitalists interested in the pro
ject, haye been looking the held
over the past week.
That St. Johns is an ideal and
logical location for
works cannot be gainsaid. With
the excellent water facilities for
trausM)rtatiou purposes and the ad
vent of the North llauk line only a
question of months the company
can well congratulate themselves
upon securing such a site.
This plant is only a forerunner of
other enterprises of 11 like nature.
It has been known for some time
that prominent Southern Oregon
mine owners have had the cuiusula
under consideration as the most
feasible jmiut for the election of re
fineries for their output, and it is
altogether likely that befote the
WushotiKal Gobi ft Copixx Com
pany have their plants in full oper
ation the election of other smelters
will have begun.
That these smelting works will
ben great thing for St. Johns goes
without saying. I'uiplnymcut fur
nished for 400 or 500 men will mean
an increase in xp.ilatiou when they
get settled with their families of not
less than 3,000 copIc.
