Phone Scott 4062 113 Jersey Street WANTED A representative of a Portland road oiling company who was here gave considerable information on the subject of oiled streets and was the means of converting several to his method of keeping down the dust. "There was a time," said the road oil man, "when it took con siderable talk mid illustration to convince people that oiled streets are the best, but it is different now. In California where they have plenty of dust, oil has driven the sprinklers out of business. I.os! Angeles has 700 niiks of oiled streets. In San" Francisco there is an ordinance providing lor the oil-, ing of the streets in the residence portion. People have found out that oiling the streets is the only way to keep down the dust. One oiling is siillicicut for a whole sea son. It accomplishes what water cannot do. Instead of washing out the dust and currying it to the euib to be blown away by the wind when it dries, oil ixicks mid haul- dens the road. We are oiling streets in Portland in the residence district, mid every one is pleased. I he first expense is the only one." It has been protKiscd to oil several blocks in the business section as tin c.criuiciit, the cost of the same to be paid for by private subscription. The tetrltory includes about six or seven blocks. The cost will be alKHit $200. The oiling company uuarnutccs that they will nut the streets in shae so that there will le no tin noyanee from dust during the bal ance of the season. It is intended as an e.ieriuieiit. If it Is success ful not only the business section but Two games of ball were played at the home grounds Sunday. " In the morning the Peninsula boys were the opponents of the locals. Having taken two games from our team without redress this season, lliey expected to have the same easy picking. The Peninsula boys, however, were given credit with making 10 or 11 runs, W'e mav be able to give the number of scoies tallied by St. Johns in about two weeks. White, the I.iniitou catcher, net id in that capacity for our boys in this inerry-go'-roiind. He n line ball player and certainly knows how to slug the siiheie. It might be1 well to kidnap him for our team. ' In the afternoon the Pcldmont1 Stars, with 11 reputation for good playing, came down the line and ! were easily taken into camp by the ; home players. The game was of the nigged order.jerrors being quite plentiful on both sides. The visi tors could do but little with l.ee's pitching, and found it easier to punch holes in the ntmospheic than to hit the ball.
