((.ontlmirit Iroin Ul wtek)
After leaving Kodgcrs, I started
up tlie hill and I Saw a man coining
at full gallop. Hump, halt, salute! ,
and I at once recognized the only
Fred Kamsey. the companion of.j
Grant, Sheridan, and others of re-1
nown in the days that tried men's
courage. How often he has told of '
trips in a canoe with Gen. Grant to
I.atiries Island, of the time they!
used to have at Ifort Vancouver,
when that city was the loading so
cial center of the northwest. When
the soldiers and Hudson Hay com-1
pany's men used to meet around the
old army jost and tell their wonder-,
fill stories of how they met and con- j
qtiered their foes the red men of !
the woods. I
What do you think, Mr. Kditor, 1
it linu mill' luiii ii fun vi'iirs since
these brave men and women, who
made Oregon what it is today, have
passed nwy. A few years ago
some who are living in our midst,
1 have heard the story fi oin the lips
of those who came here a few years
after Lewis and Clark bla.cd the
way, and I think if there is any
thing that should npcar a century
from now in the annals of history
relating to this generation, it should
be that we gave all the tributes of
honor and praise to the Oregon pio
neers. Apropos of this, Mr. I-.ditor,
would it not be a good time to take
up the matter of a tombstone for
one of those same old pioiiccis, the
man who so loved his adopted state
and the city that bears his name,
that he willetl all he had to the
children that there might be a ;
school established win. re all might

or color. It is no fault of his that
the Mime school is not in evidence.
Now. if it was, it would stand us a
monument to his philautlirophy. As
it is he lies in a grave unmarked
anil uucaicd for. the same as though
he was in a patqiets grave. Will
not Mime of the old pioneers of St.
Johns take this matter up and see
that one of the early settlers of this
state and city is hoiioicd as lie i
should be.
