Michael Hrady of Portland choo choocd Into St. Johns Inst Saturday in a big red automobile. Immedi ately upon his arrival Mayor Valen tine, chaperoned by Messrs. Chip man, Moxon and Monahan, waited upon Mr. Urady and turned the keys of the city over to him and tendered him the freedom of the en tire peninsula. Mr. Hrady is known to the above quartette as the "Orig inal Mike Urady," philanthropist, a booster from away back and the man who gave it fortune nway in St. Johns a couple of years ago. At that time Mr. Urady was laud poor. He owned the entire block on Jersey street from the Central Hotel to Tacoma street. Also the tract on the opposite side of the street from Hickner's corner to the McChesuey building. The first named block he purchased forf.soo. and one day, desiring to realize a little sending money, concluded to sell it. A put chaser was found who was willing to pay $1 ,700 for the entire block. Mr. Urady knew it was a shame to take the money, but finally concluded to do so. He was really sorry he had to make the man feel bad, but he finally separ ated the buyer from his money, and then returned to Portland before re morse would set In and touch a ten der spot. Mr. Hrady was not the only one sorry for the fellow. hverybody else was, too. It was really too bad to "stick" a man like that. Today thin very same block would bring 575,000, and the genial Hrady is woudeiing whether he handed the other fellow a fortune or lost one himself.
