One thousand votes cast as a unit means the rise or downfall of some body or something Ninety days were spent in the U. H. senate doing a hop, step and jump around the rate bill. Would the same thing happen if the ineiii' bers of the upier house were elect' ed by the tieople instead of by the Standard Oil Co. and others of the same ilk? In spite ol the misleading and lit correct retorts to the contrary it has been proven that the soldiers of the regular army did not cause 11 single violent death at San I'niu cisco. It docs not take much of tin observer to note that it is the 11 in bilious youth of the militia who causes all the adverse comment when a recourse to arms is neces sary. The II. S. regular is gener ally 11 pretty level-headed sort of it fellow. The "Made ill Oregon" idea was n good one. It has cncd the eyes of many old-timers and the lute arrivals. Hundreds of articles made here have been shown, and with judicious advertising their sale will be increased n hundred fold. The display has been educating in more ways than one. Hundreds of loya Oregonians me ready and willing to buy the home goods. Ami the wise producer will take advantage of the object lesson by combatting his eastern rival with his own wen immi advertising, Do not Iruufritit of printers' ink. Kvcry dollar siient in its purchase will return a hundred fold. It is up to the Ore gon manufacturer to take advantage of this opportunity. 10 lender tne teiepiioiieniid clcc Uiu light Mliti attractive to local residents mid the thousands of visi tors who come here weekly the coronations owning mid ocratiug these unsightly hut necessary mil sauces should lie coiuticllcd to erect (Miles of uniform size and paint them white or some shade pleasing to the eye. besides, the imles should be kept free from all advertising. Under the rights now given these companies the poles nil over the city are covered with new and oh solete advertising. The pink pills mail comes along and nails a tin sign high tip on a iMilc. lie is fol lowed by another with something or other "lfor sail." Then the 1 f I .!.!. ., . if I 1 iirigiiuc wiin 1 11c cuiitiitinicv earns get in their work. The result is a lot of rubbish lying about the streets after the first rain or visit of the small boy. A neatly painted imiIc would Ih money in thccnriKiintioo's XK'ket and something attractive in the eyes of nil who look in their diiectiou. Poles of uniform height and neatly painted look far lietter than 11 lot of miscellaneous length plaMcicd with wooden, tin ami mht advertising. A start In this three tiou would lead to other improve incuts along the line of 11 neat mid well-groomed city. It Should lie There In Order to Vote at the June Election Ilelow will be found the list of voters registered in St. Johns, or what is known as Precinct. At the next general election in Oregon woman sulTrage will again lie placed liefore the jvople to say whether thev want it or not. Atl vocates of woman mi If 1 age say that woman needs a vote to right the wtong.s she suffers at the hands of man. As u matter of fact the rights of women arc lookctl after more carefully under the laws of most states than those of men .Men rcuhrc the tact that women as a whole are less able to take care of themselves uiid their proiietty than men are. Men can, mid will, if necessaty, fight for their lives and property. Women cannot j hence men uaiuraiiy protect ineiii. t ins situation is extremely distasteful to woman suffragists, but angry pro tests cannot niter facts. In the last fifty years great progress has lnren made in the condition of women in this country us regards education mid opxrtuuity of employment and the enjoyment ot lite, t his con 1-.- ... 1 . . 1 union, uowever, uas not oceu tine to the agitation for woman sulTrage, us its udvocates would have you Dchcvc. 1 he states where women have made most progress are those in which woman suitrage bills have been most steadily and decisively defeated. There has leeu but slight improvement, if any, in the luws of the states wheie women vote, due altogether to the fact of tltut vote. If the suffrage move ment were to disband today, and no women ever vote, not u single great interest would suffer. On the other hand, were woman suffiage granted in Oregon, it would set the state back for many years. I,' G, Flanders. G11M Frank. I.ee For lime. A. Freilerielisou, C. II. Foster, I.. A. Fmier. NV.
