The regular meeting of the city council convened Tuesday evening with Mayor Valentine in the chair and all members present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The new sewer, from the Wil lamette river to the intersection of John and Jersey streets, was accept ed by the council on behalf of city. The franchise of the Pacific States Telephone & Telegraph Co., inherited from the old council, was taken ui for action. It stated that on April 6 it had 105 telephones j for another bond issue, preferring (J 11 1 Id lug to be Improved by a Four Room Addition. At a meeting of the school board held on the 10th inst. the board was authorized to improve the sanitary condition of the public school building by the addition of four rooms. It was shown that the above number of rooms could be added to the present building in such a manner as to insure sufficient light and ventilation at an expense of about $3,000. To raise the amount a special tax levy will have to be made. A majority of those present thought it unwise to ask $300.00 ! The company asks that it be al lowed to erect and maintain poles and wires, and to lay underground wires for the transmission of elec tricity for telephone and telegraph purposes within the city limits for a period of twenty-five years from the date of the passage of the ordi nance. There was not much en thusiasm manifested by any mem ber of the council after hearing the application read, and the matter was referred to the committee on water and lights. The use of the city dock as a place for storing freight of all kinds received considerable attention. It was shown that freight of all kinds was lauded and allowed to remain until the owner found it convenient to move it, much to the annoyance and inconvenience of the shippers. Aid. Norton moved that nil goods lauded from boats upon the public dock Ite allowed to remain forty eight hours.
