Phono Cast 6106. FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1906. During the past week it lins been n standoff between the muck rake and tlie pitchfork. Never mind worrying about the San Francisco fire losses. The benevolent associations known as insurance companies will shortly announce n general rise in rates. Then the losses will adjust them selves at both ends of the line. With a military escort the priestly son of the late (ien. Sher man wanted to travel the route taken by his illustrious father in his "march to the .sea." The people of the south protested against reopening gossip about this un pleasant incident and tlie trip was abandoned. Someone should tell the Apostle Dowie to stop whining mid play ball. About 145,000 people have left San Francisco since the earthquake. Of this number two-thirds were given free transportation by the railroads, Since April H there have been thirty-three distinct shocks of earthquake in California. Over 3,000 cars of .supplies have been received by the relief com mittee, who estimate three times this amount will have to be sup plied before order is restored. The year 1008 Is a long ways off and the suave czar of the house says the ! "bee" isn't bothering him to any1 great extent. Of course not. It is the "burl" that causes the worry. 1 . 1 The Dalles Optimist, a weekly putwr, will soon be launched by A. Hciiuctt and It. G. Davenport. Us aim will be to exploit the iudiisliies, 1 resources and opportunities of The Dalles and Wasco county. Mr. Dennett is one of the most popular writers in the northwest and the author of the famous Kabliitvillc letters, which he pi onuses to levive in his new paticr. Mr. l)avcnHit is well known to thecnift in general throughout the state. The Op timist will not only be welcomed nt home, but by hundreds thioughotit the northwest. Perkins, Goodrich and McKcou were appointed to look into the matter of suitable designs for advertising for the stationery used by the club. The franchise asked for at the last meeting of the city council by the Pacific States Telegraph & Telephone Co. brought out several Inquiries. It was the general opinion that the city should lie recompensed by the erection of a building for a central station. The present mi satisfactory service of the company was discussed, and for the better incut of the same Messrs. Ilishop, iNortounud Clilpuiau wcicnppoiutcd to confer with the telephone ollicials. Chief Brcdeson Explains in Regard to Reported Destitution. Editor Review: An article iu your last issue regarding a "needy family iu Point View" was decided ly in error, and I would like to ex plain a bit. In the first pluce the family lives at Oak Park not in Point View. In the next place the family has been very nicely pro vided for by the city and the people who live in proximity to the place as well ns by those who live far ther away. I have talked with a number of persons who have visited the pluce, nttioug them Rev. lf. I,. Young, and all -'ire pleased with the way the family has been cared for. 1 Here lias been no suffering and there have always been plenty of the necessities of life. There tire four children not five nntl none of them arc III iu any manner. 01 course, those who desire to help the family nre not prohibited from doing so: all donations will be gladly received. Hut what I object to is the fact that the article iu The Review would lead people to believe Unit the city was neglectful to the needs of the citizens, and that I hnd been derelict in the performance of my duty. I .shall be pleased to have anyone live tigate iu regard to this family and I feel sure that iu thai case no fault will be found with the care that has been given to this family ClIAH.
