Killed one htifTaloe. We met two of our men about 10 o'clock that had been sent by the company on the 6th of July to the rendevous on Green river to make .some arrange ments for the company in ex changing the oxteams for mules, etc.; but they found no person there, not even an Indian on the whole route. We have not seen an Indian, except two, that are with us, since we left the I.aramec fort. We encamped this, evening on the banks of the snme creek last men tioned. July 14th. This tiny we lay here for the purpose of killing and laying in more meat. We had a hard frost here this morning. We have killed a fine chance of humiloc today. I do not know the number: perhups about 8 or y. July 15th. This day we moved about 8 miles and candied until next tlay on Sweetwater creek The nights are cool here ami there is frost nearly every morning. I Here is no timber Here except a few willows along the creek. We are at this time about 8 miles from what is called Wind river mount nitis. They are in sighf of us and arc covered with snow. We have seen them for the last 10 days We leave them to the right hand. July ifilh. This tlay we moved about ten miles farther up the cteek ami encamped about noon for tlie purpose or drying meat ami getting good range for our cattle and horses. We killetl a good number of fowl which they ca sage cocks. I hey are larger 1 11:111 a common domestic chicken. Inly 171I1. This morning I caught some good fish at the camp. We left the camp at n o cock ami moved about three miles farther up the creek. We have killed buffiiloc bulls today and a number of sage chickens. HufTaloes are getting scarce here. Nothing but bulls 1 here is 110 cows liete. July iHlh. We left Sweetwater creek this morning at 6 o'clock and traveled about 17 miles ami eu cauicd 011 one of the head branches 01 the Loloriuloc ot the west, we have killed 2 huffaloe today ami one auteioiK. 1 lie tlay was pleasant ami we have had no rain since we left the north folk of the I'latte river. Here we stayed until the T o nay a man lias returned to the camp who was sent out on the 14th to try to luul some trader on Colo radoe river in order to get iufor illation lesiKvting the route to California and get 11 pilot, lie brought about 60 men with him who came to trade with us. Thev informed us that it was imtos.sihlc for waggons to get to California, but they could get down on the Columbia without much trouble, July 23d. The river here is about too yatds wide and lias a little timber on its batiks, such as cottonwood and willow. Here we stayed until the 25th and traded with the Indians ami tt uppers for packhorses, robes, etc. There is frost hete nearly every night, but the days are warm and pleasant, The pluins around here are barren and destitute of timber. July 25th. Today we crossed the liver and traveled about six mites down it and camticil on its bank. The Snake Indians and trapers catnied with us. There is no buffaloe here nor any other kind of game that we can kill e.. cept hsh. We caught some good hsh called chubs. The river is clear at this place and the water is very pure. July 26th. This morning we !cft the river and went about t2 miles and eneatniK'd on the bank of a stream called Ham's Fork. It em p ties into Green River or il Coloradoe. The Indians and some of the trappers camped with us this evening. July 27th. Today we travelled about twelve miles up Ham's Fork and encamped on its banks for the night. Killed two antelope and caught some fish today. The nights are cool aim sometimes frosty, the valley being surrounded by mountains that are covered with perettinl snow which ( has a tendency to cool the air at night. July 28th. Today we travelled up Hani's Fork about 15 miles and encamped in the afternoon on its batiks, for we frequently travel until the afternoon and lay bye until the next day. We caught some good fish here this afternoon. I caught 25 silver myself and one trout. July 29th. Nothing happened today worthy of notice. Wc traveled about to or twelve miles farther up the creek and encamjKrd on its banks in the afternoon. July 30th. Today we traveled about to miles farther up the creek and encamped for the bnllancc of the day, for the pilot thought, as we had to leave the creek, we probably could not get to any more water this afternoon, therefore wc encamped on its bank. The water is very good here and the grass is excellent In the creek bottom but the planes plains and mountains are barren and destitute of timber as far as we can sec. July 31st. We left Ham's Fork this morning and traveled about 15 miles and cucamcd on the bank of u small stream called Dlack's Fork of Green River. The way wc traveled today was hilly, rough and rocky, and we were in sight of a large range of high mountains on our left which are covered with cricttial snow. There is a large smoke in sight and west of the en campment tesembliiig that of u volcano, which we suppose to be grass set on fire by the Indians. 1841. August 1. - Today we traveled about 12 miles through 11 rough mountainous country and encamped on the bank of 11 small cieek that enters into Hl.ick Fork. August 2d. This day we went about 12 miles up one fork of the same branch that we eucamied on last night. Here one of the waggons broke down and we were obliged to camp until morning and mend it. We are in a small valley this evening, surrounded by high hills and mountains, and in sight of mountains on the right and left or north and south that are covered with snow, some of which are, icrhaps, more than one hundred miles off. August 3d. We traveled about 20 miles today over high hills and rough places and arrived at Hear River and cucnuicd on its bank. ITie river is about 50 yards wide here mid has a sandy bottom and no timber 011 its banks excepting small willows. Killed one antelope today. August 4U1. Today we did not move Irom the camp, but lay by and caught a good uumler of trout, some of which were 18 in ches in length. There is a great number wild geese here and other fowls, and antelopes. August 5th. We traveled about 18 miles today down the bank of Hear River. We caught some trout, and killed a antelope ami some wild geese. 1 hey are very plenty here. August bin. we traveled 21 miles today 011 the bank of Hear River, There is high hills and mountains on each side of the river. We caught a good numler of fine tiout, and other fish today and killed one Pormiepiuc porcupine uid some antelope. Atiguit 7th Tins morning we left the river and came to it again it twelve o'clock. Nooued nt it mil left it again on account of being closed in by high hills on .aeh side. We came to it at night uid eueauiet 011 its bank. August Mh. We did not leave the camp today until twelve 'clock. We traveled about 10 miles and encamped on the bank of 1 small branch of pure spring water ibout 11 mile from the river. We have caught a great number of fish today, trout and chubs. August oth. Today we traveled about 15 miles 011 ths bank of the river except in the afternoon we left the river and returned to it igaiu in the evening and encamped 011 its bank. Killetl two antelope today and caught u number of fine Hsh. August toth. We traveled about to miles today and arrived .it the Soda springs on the batiks of Hear river. There is a great mint ikt ot the.se springs winch are constantly bttbbliug and throwing off gass. Some spout water to a considerable distance and roar like a steamboat. Others form mounds which are round. The water boils out of the middle and forms them by the .sediment running down the side. There are high mountains hete on each side of tlie river. August 1 1 th. Today we traveled about 4 miles and the company be came divided, 4 cartsaud 4 waggons tor uregon, aim 0 waggotis tor California, myself for one. We traveled about u miles farther and encamped on the bank of the river. The river here runs through a deep channel of black rock having the appearance of being melted at some future previous time.
