MUSIC HAS CHARMS, Our Local Grist
Need Of Cornet Band In St. Johns
Is Admiitcil By Everyone.
Many cities not so large as St.
Johns have amateur bands -and in
most cases the bands prove a nood
advertisement for the up-to-dateness
of the community. St. Johns bus
had a baud a good one, too
known as the M. W. A. band: but
after a while all interest lagged and
finally the organization was
abandoned.
There is a plan forming now to
organize a baud here and .secure a
competent instructor. Such a pur
pose is excellent for, in spite of
all the ridicule and sarcasm vented
upon "amateur bauds," it is realized
that the presence of one in a small
city is beneficial.
A couple of concerts each week
in the open air would get out the
people and draw others to the
citv. Everyone likes music and
there is 110 doubt thnt the business
men of St. Johns would be justified
in paying a certain sum each week
because of an iilcreased trade.
This plan is adopted in other places
where the city is not in a condition
to pay all the cost.
It is claimed by those who have
investigated the conditions that
there is enough musical talent in
St. Johns to form a large baud
and there is no doubt that enough
interest would be taken to keep in
trim.
The expense of a director has to
be taken into consideration. The
members can well afford to pay for
their instruments and their music
and give their time: but when it
comes to giving up foran instructor
the boys feel a bit leary.
Some steps should be taken to
push this matter along. It is a
good thing.
