That the Hon-Tou barkr short
is to move off its frame buildiiiir and
erect a fine brick block in its stead.
That the new mill of the St.
Johns Luinkr Company will be the
finest and most complete to k
found iu Oregon.
That M. L. Holhrook is wonder
ing where that fine fountain is
which the city council was to erect
sent to his address. Kach week
since hc left here this paper has
ken carefully addressed to linn, in
care of another party to facilitate
acctrratc delivery, yet he 1m failed
to receive any copy. He registered
a kick a week or so since and wc
did tin three separate issues and
mailed to him: these he received
but none others.
There seems to be something lax
in the department down there: yet
here in Portland there fails to be
the swiftness usually connected with
a metropolitan office. Tint Ritvtmv
leaves here every Kriday afternoon
at five o'clock and one hour later
should be in the Portland office:
yet very few of our stibscrikrs at
that point receive their papers be
fore Monday. It would be a mighty
nice thing if the rwstal department
could wiggle a bit faster and thus
aid Thk Kkvikw and its half
million patrons.
A Lawsuit On.
It is now shown that W. H.
King and P. J. Peterson do not
intend to nltow the charges filed
against them to be dropped. Sub
jxfiias have ken served upon J.
H. Shields and J. II. IJlack and
they were called before the district
attorney, who is to investigate.
The affair seems rather complex
insofar as Shields' name was signed
to what purorted to be a sworn
statement iu the Telegram while
Hlack's name was apeuded to an
unsworn statement, precisely like
the one published. Mr. Black's
name was read when the statement
was made public at the council
meeting. Mr. Shields' name was
not read as was promised by the
Telegram: hence the Telegram may
exect trouble from Shields 011 the
one hand or from King and Peter-
sou on the other.
The outcome of the whole affair
will k eagerly looked for by all
citizens of St. Johns.
Card of Thanks.
We desire to heartily thank the
citizens of St. Johns and the fire
department of Portland for the
prompt and excellent aid tendered
us early iu the morning of I?riday,
Sepiemkr 1, when our plant was
so badly damaged by fire. But for
this aid and the promptness with
which the firebo.it hastened to our
relief our loss would have kx-n
much greater, and the services so
freely given are appreciated. The
"boys" of the fireboat worked with
a will and as a result our dryhou.se
and its contents are now intact.
