The meeting of the city council tonight will lie an interesting one from more than one point of view, and the audience that will greet the city fathers promises to be large and enthusiastic. The Kdwards resig nation, now in the hands of Mayor King, is on the program, and the legal points'of which, as will be ex plained by City Attorney ureent-, will undoubtedly receive the strict attention of all. The new planing mill is uvnriui! completion. , The machinery ar rived Monday, nud the men arc ut work putting it in place. This build ing will make n large addition to the plant. Last Friday the Clark & Wilson Lumber Co. cut nn immense spruce log measuring nine feel in diameter and a.i feet long, containing 8,500 feet log measure anil over 10,000 feel board measure. It took tliem an hour and a half to cut it. This Is the largest log ever cut at this mill. Nothing has ever been much more welcome to Muiitou people than Harris meat market. Ior years no one could get meat unless they went to Portland or procured it of 11 trav eling butcher, who only came twice a week. Harris has ice for sale, too, at very reasonable rules. This is another great convenience. Alliert Wilson has been nt wotk with a gang of men cleaning and drying up the swamp at the foot of the canyon. All the dead trees ami underbrush have been tlona away with, and 11 loiititiful litlO'park fj the result. Saturday night's dance was u great success. There were over .jo couples present a .splendid crowd. They danced until the roosters crowed, and then wanted to dunce more. Quite n number of young people from St. Johns and Portland were present. The ice cream dis appeared about 1 o'clock, and the music stopped at .1:15 nt. The evening was cool enough to make life enjoyable, ami every one went home satisfied that they had a good time. Linnton has lo.it both its opuni tors during the great railroad strike. The Northern Pacific sent n man out to attend to the railroad's intuit to here, but has now decided to take him nwny. Linnton needs un oper ator very much, seeing that thure U a jHipulation of considerably over 300, not Including the iiumcioiiK farmers and residences in the imme diate vicinity. People wishing to take trains from here now never know when to exiect them some thing which is very annoying. The construction of the county road is progressing rapidly. At Liutonu they have taken the kinks and twists out of it, nud have made it wiiler and level. One of the two bridges has been removed, nud the place between the spanning jwlnts lias been filled in with rock and dirt. A lurge pipe runs under the road now, which conveys the water from the hills into the fields. The large gulch at the ravine is slowly being filled up. The county has gone to some expense in building a concrete water way, which will nllow tlul water from the reservoir to pass through. Last Friday afternoon Verl Will iams celebrated his niutli birthday with a surprise party. At 2:30 all the young folks of Linnton quietly gathered in Mr, Katchel s yard in eager exjectatiou. Verl was kept in the house and did not know what was going on outside. When all were present his attention was at tracted to a passing boat, but inl mediately diverted by the shouts and yells of Surprise?
