COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY ITEM a. t Tke'o? tiins and cutis of the academic gradtiittes are quite nifty Tlw fair uroumls viewed from the University bluff are a thing of fouty especially when illumined The Junior Literary society held i vcrv en lovable meeting Tuesday. The cornet solo by liddle Nordhoff nsmy well received. The baseball team defeated the high school lads on May 17 by the score of seven to one. MunnoWl received eilKtliretl support and had his opponents completely at his amy. The May nuiiik'r of the Coluiu biad lias a very acceptable new drw. The stories are up to the mail standard. Many thanks arc due the utliletic editor for the Col csbii track team records. The best players at handball In lie different divisions are: faculty -F. Gallagher four, Prof. Tierncy; warders a. Weber and lf. Weber; day scholars T. Monks, and It. Case; juniors S. I.eavy and K. Wilkinson. On Wednesday the team met the sowers 01 Vuncouver on the bar nek grounds iu ti four to one con test Wilkinson had his opponents coapietely at his mercy. Th ; bat ting by both teams was heavy but t always opportune. The second team lileh kpIiooI Wtated a pick-up team by the score ef seven to two. The features of wgame were Meamy's pitching tor Columbia, having 15 strike-outs w Ms cmlit, and Spenser's playing "short, missing six easy chances. Tomorrow the track team tries its conclusions with the boys of ncific College, Newberg. We are "oeeded first place iu all events Cfpt the mile run. Kelley, Col- wss amiau, will enter in a Mnberof events and is easily the ionerof every event he enters. Weber. Rae, Quinn and wur ought to capture points, ggw is expected to land the Wt mats. There are several houses in this vicinity that have been rented by parties who are coming to Portland to visit the fair and have a getieral outing and there will be many demands for small cottages ere thc summer is over. This will be a splendid oppor tunity for Saint Johns to forge to the front ns a city of homei where expenses may be kept at an ceo nomical figure, and where there shall be found no holdup prices While there will be cases of exorb itant rates in the northwest this city can get many bouquets by being conservative iu all prices asKeu ami, no doubt, train res dents who will be permanent. It is to thc interest of the entire community to put the best foot forward and show the visitors that we have many udvantatrcs not possessed elsewhere. Low carfare and frequent and convenient service will bring a host' of "fair" visitors to us: and it is possible that many muy oc induced to invest and built: homes. If every resident will consider himself a committee to push nlouir the work of encouraging 'visitors by best serving them Saint Johns will merit and receive a vast amount of paying advertising. Will Visit Schools. On thc afternoon of Monday, Muy 30, eight mcmncrs of thc Grand Army of thc Republic, wil visit thc schools of Saint Johns. 1 liese will be Joseph bommur, N. I,. Smith, II. H. Thompson, Philip Brady, I). J. Ilorsman, T. C. His- tig, K. A. Rowly iiud J. I,. Wells. At two o clock the lirst, second and third grades will rentier thc following program: i- balute. a Song by Pirst grade. 3 What Can We Do? 4 Plower Song. S Recitation ''Comrades At Rest." At the same time thc fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades will givo the following program: 1 Iixercbte "Our Plag." a Song "Review of Veterans." 3 "United Country" Pour girls iu costume. 4 Poem "The Sleepers. ' ' A general invitation is extended to all those interested to te present upon this occasion. Will Use Brick. In 11 very few weeks our ix-ople will have an opportunity to use ocal made pressed brick of good utility iu buildings brick made here iu Saint Johns. The opening of the first kiln is very uuxiously awaitedboth by the promoters of the enterprise and the general pub- c. High prices have heretofore made le use of brick prohibitive and guilders have used lumber exclus ively. It is believed that the, brick now to be turned out can be fur nished at a rate that will induce icir general use and it must le remembered that every brick build- tig iu a block means a lower insur ance rate for that block. The first brick turned out will be used iu the construction of the new bank build- ng and the work at the brick ilunt is being pushed us rupldly as possible. Safe is Here. The splendid manganese safe for te rcnmsuia uauic arriveu on Wednesday ami is now in place in le temporary othce. It was the ntention of this bank to open for business on Thursday, June 1 , but as that is a holiday the commence ment will lie postponed. l hen it ould never do to open a goou business plant on a Priday and to open it on Saturday would seem sort of laiy. Bes des all that it is a question whether the wood finishing will be solidly dry by the date at first con templated. The woodwork is very handsome and will nnisn nicety u leuty of time be allowed. Beyond I cavil the bank will doubtless open for business on Monday, June but a large announcement; ui these columns next week will be authentic aud defiuite. Met With AccitfU. This inoriiiug about eight-thirty while working 011 a wheeler in grading Jersey street (north) Verg Hanna was caught in tne irip ami narrowly escaped a couple broken legs. Mr. Hanna is a yotiug man uot tall enough aud not heavy enough to handle one of those wheelers without risk. He was thrown in between thc trip aud crossbar, aud both tegs between the ktiee ana ankle were badly contused and skinned. Dr. MacLachlan was at once summoned to the home of-Pascal Hill, where the injured man wa promptly carried. The injuries will not be long in healing. A new ad this week appears for Potter & Goold. If our advertisers will really and carefully test the merits of Tjik Riivntw we shall itive to enlarge the paper sooner tluin we had intended. At thc Evangelical church Rev. G. I.. Tufts, of Portland, gave very entertaining talk Sunday even ing ujxni the advantages possessed byuu anti-saloon town. A large audience was present. borne time ago a collection was made to defray expenses of collect ing and making an exhibit by thc schools of Saiut Johns. A complete report of this matter will appear in next week's issue of Tint KitviKW. It was voted at the school meet ug Wednesday evening to devote thc balance of the cash iclt irom thc school exhibit fund to the school ibrary fund. The sum of i 10 was raised and the balance remain ing is $24.37. It was expected that several offi cinls of the Knights of Pythias frit ternity from Portland would be iu Saint Johns last Sunday to confer with local brethren regarding the formation of a lodge here. The meeting was postponed. There .was a tremendous rush at the "opening" of the Saint Johns pharmacy Tuesday evening wnen free soda and free ice cream was dispensed to every caller. The frequent small boy did excelleut service by the multiplicity 01 nis isits but none were refused. Tub Rkvibw spent all day Mon day in installing a splendid 10x15 job press of the best model and a paper cutter 'of sufficient size to cut all ordinary brands of paper. Just as rapidly as possible new apparatus and type will be added, Tint Rk view improved, and all will be up-to-the-minute Conductor Monohan suffered a badly iujured arm last Thursday swiftly revolving bratcenanaie coming in contact wiui 11. wr, Monohan was on car 190 when tne airbrakes nave out and refused to do duty -and the actiou of the hand brake was unexpected, lie uau an X-ray of the bruise and found no bones broken but suffered much pain. The Concregational people have erected a large tabernacle one block east of the Evangelical cuurcn, where they will hold services while buildintr their church. The first service will be held Sunday evening next, beginning rai seven-fortyfive. Rev. Upshaw will preach and the male quartet will sing. The taber nacle will be comfortably seated aud well lighted, and everybody will be made welcome. The next regular meeting of the Susan B. Anthony club will be held next Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Adams at No. 27 North Ninth street, Portland. The members and friends will all please leave Saint Johns on the 1 :30 car. A called meeting of the club will be held tomorrow a'terno n at 2:30 in Dr. MacLachlan's office. A matter of special importance is to be discussed. Mr. Kcogan Better. dick Keogau, wno met with an accident at the University shingle mill a few weeks ago, is improving rapidly. Dr. jones and Dr. uevnttl, in consultation, made an examination of the injured man and found three ribs of the left side and one of the right side fractured, but no interna! injuries of n serious nature. It was feared that his back was badly Hurt, but, beyond n slight numb ness where he struck and a conse queiit weakness, Mr. Kcogan is better than the most saiiiniinc could have hoped for, owing materially iu ins ruggcti constitution. With thc aid of n pair of crutches Mr. Kcogan hopes to be out in week or so, for, as he says, "good men arc scarce," and wc can't afford to lose him. Trolley Lines Sold. Once more has the deal whereby Portland's electric railways hnve been bought by nn eastern syndi cate been pushed through accord ing to thc daily papers. Everv little while one of Portland's papers spring's this "scoop" to the public and, soon after, denies it. This time there arc six million dollars in the deal but no one knows how high the next figure will be. OSCAR DeVAUL, M. D Office liuiim, 9 to 11 ,1, in., to j p. in. Olllce I'honr, Scott 1104.
