Despite tbe fact tbat financial con
ditions are anything but satisfactory
witb tbe livestock business, local
stockmen are going ahead with tbeir
business In anticipation of tbe re
turn of normal and better conditions.
The fact too, that range conditions
are better this season than tbey have
been for a food many years cast
givea new hope to the fellow who is
striving to make a go of It, and tbe
pessimism tbat would ordinarily be
present wltb economic conditions
such as they are la not generally In
evidence. Reports from all quart
ers within and adjacent to the Ocho
co Forest indicate that a lot of beef
will be ready for tbe market direct
ly from tbe open range by July 1 to
IS. One of the leading wool grow
ers of this section of tbe state made
tbe remark a few days ago that be
had never before seen such fat sheep
or such excellent wool at this season
of the year.
Hanger W. A. Donnelly and S. C.
Congicton, assisted by John Dobryj
win complete today (Thursday) a
telephone line connecting big summit
prairie with Paulina- The new line
parallels the road which Is now un
der construction between these two
points.
It is reported that one of the re
cent waterspouts in this locality did
a lot of damage to the road within '
the Forest on Mill Creek. The road
had just been repalrd and put In
better condition than it bad ever
been before when the waterspout
came. Moaners. Chas. Glasgow and
Chas. Merry are now working on
this road and have the upper end of
It completed to within a half a mile
of tbe main summit. Within two or
three weeks it should be possible to
go by road to Divide Ranger Sta
tion on the summit of the mountain.
This station will be occupied by S.
W. Babcock during the fire season,
from which point he will work the
two lookout points adjacent, vi;
Hash Rock and Tamarac Point.'
Messers. Lee Blevlns, J. E. Wil
son and E. D. Sandvlg are now bu
sily, engaged in Improving the road
up Canyon Creek toward Summit
Prairie from the Ochoco Highway,
and particularity that portion on the
west slope of the mountain. An en
tirely new road will be constructed
over more than half of the distance
up the steep part of the mountain,
and the maximum grade when the
road is completed will be approxim
ately 11 per cent, which will be a
great Improvement over the old
road which was double this percent
or 22 per cent at one of the steep
pitches generally known as a "rest
ing place" for Fords.
Ranger E. W- Donnelly, assisted
by Mesaers. Cy KImmell, Judd Lytle,
Eugene Miller and Richard Helms,
haa just completed 5 1-2 miles of
new telephone line between Allison
Ranger Station and the main line
which serves the section about Su
plee. The line will now be extended
south from Allison Ranger Station
to Black Butte before July 1, and
immediately thereafter another line
of IS miles will be constructed on
towards Burns, to connect with a
new line to be built by the Malheur
Forest. When this system la com
pleted, the Ochoco and Malheur For
ests will be In a position to co-oper
ate very much. more closely than ev
er before in a fire protection and
administrative way.
Ranger Ralph Elder, who receiv
ed instruction from Portland to re
port for Airplane -patrol for tiro pro
tection, has been advised that he will
not be needed this season on account
of the substitution of another ran
ger whose physical condition would
not permit him to continue with the
work of the average ranger in the
field, but whose ability to fill the
position as a pilot for airplane pa
trol service bad not been Impaired.
This is certainly good news to the
Ochoco, since a lot of work had been
planned for Ranger Elder's district
for the season and the local adminis
tration had been hard put to find a
meanB to accomplish the work with
the Iobs of Mr. Elder.
Ranger Blake, with the assistance
of W. E- Bennett and Matt Asher, Is
reconstructing his pasture' fence at I X
Beaver Ranger Station, also build
ing about two miles . of telephone
line, burning accumulated brush at ! X
the station as the result of wood cut
ting, etc., and doing numerous oth
er Improvement Jobs about his bead
quarters, which will greatly Increase
the attractiveness of the place. Dur
ing the year, It is expected that the
station barn, wood-shed,' and other
buildings will be stained with the
regulation bungalow brown color, a
new yard fence constructed which
will extend out and front the new
highway Just completed, an addition
made to the station house In the
form of a new kitchen and bathroom
and other Improvement Jobs too
numerous to mention.
