Fire losses In Oregon for the month
of June, not including the city of
Portland, totaled $258,725, according to
a report prepared by A. C. Barber,
state fire marshal. The fires number
ed thirty-two, the most disastrous oc
curtnft at Whitney, with a loss of $65,
000. A. M. Cannon, formerly cf the Port
land schools, who has arrived In Hoed
River to assume his duties as superin
tendent of city schools, has announced
that B. H. Conkle, who for the past
few years has been principal of the
Enterprise high school, has been ap
pointed principal of the Hoed River
school.
Approximately 250,000 gallon of
Texas gasoline will be brought Into
Oregon this week in at attempt to
relieve the shortage existing In Port
land and the Wlllamett valley, ac
cording to arrangements made by the
Dealers' Motor Car Association of Or
gon and the Southern Pacific Railway
Organization of ths republican state
central committee was effected Satur
day In Portland with the re-election
of Thomas H. Tongue of Hillsboro as
chairman. Under the direction of the
stat committee, Chairman Tongue
waa authorized to appoint an execu
tive committee of 21 members, 11 of
whom shall he members of the state
committee, and ten women. This ex
ecutive committee will seleot a treasur
er, secretary and publicity manager.
During the fiscal year ending June
$0, 1920, a total of 21,87$ industrial
accidents were reported to the state
industrial accident commission, ac
cording to a statement Just issued by
the claim department of that ccmmls
slon. Of that number 157 were fatal
acoldenta. The monthly average for
the year was 1768.41 non-fatal acci
dents and 18.8 fatal accidents. The
report show that during ths yar the
commission disposed' of 1479 claims
more than the total numbered receiv
ed, this making an average monthly
gain of 123.26 claims.
Persons under 16 years of age who
attempt to drive a motor vehicle in
Oregon, are doing so In violation of
th provisions ot th recently enacted
motor vehicle drivers' license law and
are aabject to arrest and fine, accord
ing to a statement Issued by Secre
tary of Slate Kozer. Although the
enforcement of the law has been sus
pended temporarily, pending the is
suance ot licenses to (bos who have
filed their applications, the law speci
fically prohibit the operation of motor
vehicles by persons under If year of
age, license or no license, and there 1
no excuse for the violation of thia
section of the act, Kozer explains.
