Approximately 815,000 or one-sixth
ot the state's quota outside of
ward the budget sought by the Ore
gon State Chamber of Commerce in

Springfield, Marshfield and Bend
were the three first towns to go over
the top in the order named, in rais
ing their quota. Other towns that
Eugene, Newport, Madras & Jeffer

ras & Jefferson county committee,
in a letter to President Charles Hall
of the Oregon State Chamber of Com
merce, reporting the success of the
Madras & Jefferson county canvass,
aid:
"This section of the state is great
ly Interested in raising the Greater
Oregon fund, and we want to see
every other section of the state sup
port this movement heartily. This
applies especially to Portland. Port
land has a great opportunity at thla
time to prove to the outlaying sec
tions ot Oregon, which comprise her
trade territory, that she la willing
and ready to reciprocate in the solu
tion of our problems, and we don t
expect her to fail."

gress at Prinevill, Coquille, Myrtle
Point. Klamath Falls, Lakevlew,
Wellowa, Elgin, Lebanon and Wapiu

Sea Serpents Numerous.
There :ire pienty of sea serpents,
and of all snakes they sre the most
venomous, in tropical waters they are

Entailed by Using Small Imple
ments. on a horse-drawn plow of the same
size. A three-bottom plow drawn by
a suitable tractor enables one man to
accomplish from 60 to 70 per cent
more than does the two-bottom plow
drawn by six horses.
Two-Row Cultivator.
These facts were brought out by
about 600 replies to an Inquiry ad
dressed to fanners In central Illinois
by the office of farm management.
United States department of agricul
ture. I'nder conditions where the use
of a two-row corn cultivator Is. prac
ticable, tills machine enables one mac
to cover nearly twice as much ground
per day as with a one-row cultivator.
In the section represented by replies
received by the department, three
horses are most commonly used mi
the two-row cultivator and the addi
tion of a fourth horse apparently In
creases but little the amount of
ground covered per day.
Such of these farmers as use corn
binders have found the use of this
machine Increases the efficiency of
man labor 50 per cent, on the aver
age, over that achieved when cutting
and shocking by hand. Eighty bushels,
the reports show, Is an average day's
wort for one man when husking corn
from the standing stalk by baud.

With respect to the value of a hay
loader, they learned that the use of
