Salem, Ore. The Oregon legislature
convened In special session Monday
morning. Governor Olcott In his mes
sage to the legislature made the fol
lowing recommendations:
Increase In the compensation provid
ed for Injured workmen and their de
pendents under the workmen's com
pensation law.
Additional funds to carry out the
soldiers', sailors' and marines' educa
tional act
Supplementary legislation to make
Irrigation and drainage district bond
ing act workable.
Submission to electorate of constitu
tional amendment restoring capital
punishment.
Amendment of parole law so as to
permit flat sentences on persons con
victed of the graver crimes.
Ratification of women's suffrage
amendment
Separate commissions for the com
mercial fishing and game Interests of
state.
That only paramount legislation be
considered.
Many bills have been placed before
the houses for consideration. Whether
these will be considered during the
special session Is problematical, as feel
ing for a Bhort session and against
the full 20-day special allotment Is
strong.
Resolutions ratifying the national
woman's suffrage amendment was the
first legislation In both branches of the
legislature. The vote on the suffrage
resolution was unanimous In both
houses.

ton was chosen to deliver the Lincoln
day address In the house on February
12.
The death list In eastern Mexico
from recent earthquakes, floods and
volcanic eruptions is estimated at
7000.
Resolutions approving the antl-strlke
clause of the Cummins railroad bill
were adopted by the Iowa Farm Bu
reau federation.
Governor Charles J. McCarthy and
a group of Hawaiian legislators are
en route to Washington to present a
plea to have Hawaii granted statehood.
San Francisco was selected by the
democratic national committee as the
place for the party's 1920 national con
vention, and Monday, June 28, was
fixed as the convention date.

attacks on armistice day were denied
in a letter from General Pershing,
made public by Representative Fuller,
republican, Massachusetts.
The estimated requirements of the
United States government, not Includ
ing anything for the railroad adminis
tration for the next fiscal year, were
placed at $3,250,000,000 by James W.
Good of Iowa, chairman of the house
committee on appropriations.
Increased Pay for Navy Men Proposed
Washington. The house naval com
mittee voted unanimously to recom
mend increases of 30 to 60 per cent
in the pay of enlisted men In the
navy and advances ranging from $240
to $840 a year for officers. Every
man in the navy, except recruits and
admirals, would share In the Increase.
. Russian War Loss 35,000,000.
Warsaw. Russia's war losses In kill
ed and wounded aggregated 35,000,000,
according to statistics of the Kolchak
government.
