In 1899 when Mr. NeldlK waa a
free Innce newapnper mnn In San
Franclaco and lived with Merle John
on. Wallace and Will Irwin and oth
M Stanford wrltera In Gelett BurgeRa'
old Neighborhood HnuRe, he wrote a
ahnrt atory railed "The Fire Fllnft
era" for The Family Journal, a new
magazine.
The editor was enthiiRlaatle. about
It and Neldlg waa confident that he
bad at laat itot started toward a auc
eeaful career as a magazine writer.
However, like many other new mag
zlnea, The Family Journal wna short
of funds. The editor found It Im
poRRlble to Veep up until "The Fire
Fllngers" could be published.
Hence, when NeldlR waited several
months for word from the mngazlne,
without receiving either chock or
returned manuscript, he became ner-1
tous. He wont to the editor, to find ,
to hla surprise, a padlock on the door
of The Family Journal. The one
eopy or "The Fire rnngers" siory
was on the opposite side of the door.
, Mr. Neldlg returned home and tem
porarily forgot the matter. Several
years passed before he thought of It
again. When he did he determined
to develop the story further and ex
pand It to novel length.
For over fifteen years he added
bits to the baale Idea and wrote var
ious episodes of the story, when time
permitted. About a year ago he sub
mitted to the Saturday Evening Post
a complete novel. This was accept
ed and published In serlnl form. More
recently It hna been published by
I)odd, Mead & Co., and now comes the
Universal Film version.

"The Whirlpool." Alice Brady's
Intest Select Picture, adapted for the

Morton's popular novel of the same
name, will be ahown bare at the Ly
ric theater on Sunday, as a feature
In her Select Star Series, and promis
es to surpuHB even the best of Its pre
decessors. The atory deals with the struggles
of a nobler nature of a young girl
brought up amid the temptatlona of
a gambling house conducted by her
uncle, a prominent figure In New
York's tenderloin. Bella Cavello,
(Alice Brady) leads men on to play.
In her uncle's gambling house al
though her sul revolts at tha thought
of the ruin which she ultimately
brings to many of the habitues. One
of the most frequent visitors, Rich
ard Brettner, fnlls in love with her,
and In aplte of her protests, goes to
every length to provide her with cost
ly gifts. His thefts lead him Into
court where Judge Reverton, because
'onneetlnn with her Tenderloin gamb
I ni; Iiouho r with Iirtt.ir, whom he
has tried, remains steadfaRt. and she
keeps uo a semblance of friendship
with Hulliitn.
The confexslon which she contrives
finally to get from him Is overheard
by her hiiHhand, shortly after Dr.
Coinyns, who recognizes her, tells the
Judge of her past life. Bella, now
sure of Brett ner'R release, plans to
leave Reverton "that she may not
bring disgrace to him but he begs
her t stay with him. for In spite of
everything his love for her remains.
of Brettner's youth and previously
fine record, suspends sentence.
Shortly after this one escape from
justice. Brettner, through Ferris, the
uncle (who cunningly suggests this
means of attaining funds), steals the
great Beshnu emerald. He Is arrest
ed for the murder of the owner, Col
onel Warren, which occur at the
time of the theft.
Arthur Hallam, Warren's nephew,
who had encountered Brettner on the
night of the theft and murder, Is sent
by Dr. Comyns to a sanatorium for
the recovery of his shattered nerves.
Judge Reverton Is also sent to the
snce place and both men full In love
with a charming new arrival who
gives the name of Isabel Corbln. This
Is Bella Cavello, who realizes that
Hallam must be the true murderer
and. still Interested In Brettner's case
determines to follow HallBBi and
wring from him a confession of his
crime.
Her purpose, to gain this confess
ion, In spite of the fact that she mar
rles Reverton, who Is Ignorant of her

chanan. Is a Christmas pantomime
that will be presented at the Lyric
theater on Wednesday evening. Dec.
31, under the auspices of the Christ
ian Kndeavor society of the Christian
church.
The masque is presented In four
scenes, the story of which Is brief
ly as follows:
j Scene I. The open hill country of
i Judea. with the shepherds reclining
around an open fire. At the sound
of angel voicea their attention is t'ii
, ed to the wonderful star, which they
. follow in loving adoration.
Scene II. Joseph enters while the
angel voices continue. He passes on
in wonder.
Scene III. As the curtains are
drawn there Is heard in the distance
"Silent Night" and we see the man
ger with Mary and Joseph bending
low over it. Little King Jesus is
viewed by the Three Kings, the shep
herds and a score of happy little
children who offer love gifts.
Scene .V. Same as prologue scene.
The narrator appears In the alcove
and four young women appear by
her and sing "It Came Upon The
Midnight Clear."
There will be appropriate music
throughout and the lights will har
monize with the scenes.

The place was opened in July of
