The press and some of the offi dais of the farm bureau in Deschutes county are much alarmed about an announ?emeLt made in t'ue Journal a short time ago tc the e'ft that a Urge pt-tbtn ranc!.. very large in fact, 1 to b? developed near PrineTille the head ' f which is a Japanese. Just why these people, should be so badly tgilatea about uomething in old Crook county, to near the county seat, when :ey hare their own af fairs tolfciut about is not evident. The land? all lie well within this county, ths logical market for the product of tl: 14.000 acre potato ranch is rrceville, and if thei? is a call for alarm Thy should Deschutes county worry so much through the medium of the Deschutes Valley Potato Growers' Association. We adm't th?t the invasion t f Jap anese labor, eo called, is a jad thinj for any community, but the fact that this man, George Shumia, is at the head of this corporatoin need not mean anything regarding the labor situation. Should Japanese workmen be em ployed in irrigating and weeding a 14,000 acre potato patch, I know The supply of Turkeys is limited, and we would advise that you place . your order early. A HOUSE CLEANING The citizens of Prinerille and the surrounding territory have shown their attitude In support of a cleaner fair by the signing of the petition ask ing for the suppression of the most objectionable elements at the Oregon Inter-State Fair. This action is a good one, In that it shows the officials the attitude of the people in the matter, and it will no doubt be appreciated by the coun cil and other officials in charge of city and county affairs. The people themselves are per haps to blame for conditions, admit- MICHEL GROCERY COMPANY HEADQUARTERS FOR FANCY GROCERIES r WRITE OR PHOXE TJ8 FOR WHAT YOU JTEED IS THE GROCERY LIXE8 WE MAKE A SPECIALTY OF THE GROCERY BUSINESS PROMPT SHIPMENT GUARANTEED Mi rim '"It IK VV- J T 1 kxfV JT a. I The officers are but members of ! the community, citizens like the re- mainder of us. and unlets tome voice I is made regarding the attitude of the ! people, no one is to be blamed but I the people themselves. ' It is safe to predict that surh'eon ; ditlons as prevailed in some quarters ' last year will not be evident again, j unless the people Invite them by in 1 activity and an attitude of intolera- tion. I No one objects to the spin wheels : and othpr like devices to collect the money from those who wish to play them at such times, and while there ! is influence in surh practice that may not be uplifting, no apparent object ion Is being made to these things. Other conditions, too evident, that would have never been attempted in the days of the open town when sa- ; loons and other evils were under II j cense, are a violation of city, county and state laws, and while the general j feeling has been to give free rMn dur ! ing the fair to small irregularities. conditions that prevailed during the local fair In October, are an Insult to all law-abiding and decent people In the town and county and should not I be endured in the future. The surest way to eradicate them is by giving the officials the support of the people, and this Is the effect that the filing of the petitions which are being circulated should have. There seems to be no other motive than one of support and honest effort to better conditions In the minds of those behind the move, which Is heartily endorsed by and will be fur ther supported by the Journal. 551.-t14lJ NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION Drnartmrnt of th Intrrior. The pis club boys of Madlsoo coun ty, Kla., are planning to market their pigs next fall In a co-operative car load shipment These boys are now busily engaged In a feeding contest and are working fur one of a number of prizes offered for the moxt success ful feeders. Peanut meal and corn, with rape and rye pastures, make up the present rations of the club pigs. The local county agent hits already Informed a number of livestock com mission companies of the plan of mar keting the club plu'fi, and states that the buyer will have to bid above the market price to get tli'em. WILL IT WORK THE OTHER WAY? It is a notorlons fact that telephone service has become poorer as the rates advanced. Now, since the rates are being ad Justed to a lower plane, will the ser vice increase in efficiency? We all hope so. I The Weak Link The business of tho nation la con ducted on tho credit basis. Tho whole fabric Is spun on the warp of good credit. Thlt fact make It im perative that every one who haa any business dealing! thould meet his ob ligutlont promptly. For if the busi ness It built on credit, It must be on ;km1 credit, else the whole system is bad. Good credit meant to the man who conducts a merchandising busi ness that he can buy where and when he ph ases and be sure of prompt de livery, close prlcet and quality goods. If his credit la not good he must be content with what It given him and not what he want". Thlt condition, of course, comet around to the ulti mate consumer and he tnuHt auffor along with tho merchant. The mer chant's credit is made bad by hit hav ing to carry customer! whose credit Is not good. The whole thing Is a cooperative proposition. Those who do not meet their bills promptly are making others suffer who do pay, as well as tbemselveB. It Is seldom that a careless attitude In thlt matter af fects only the Individual who It care lets. Our community Intoretta are too closely Interwoven to permit of this being true. Each Individual should consider that his failure to meet his bills promptly when due does not stop at this point. It goes on to the mer chant, from him to the wholesaler, or Jobber, then to the manufacturer, and may result In tho closing down of factories, throwing men and women out of employment. The weakest link In the chain determine! lhe strength of the whole. Do not be the weak link In your community. Being; one of a series of display editorials, the purpose of which is to create a bet ter understanding between the local merchants and the consumers.
