A week ago, two of our most en
terprising merchants received the
flm carload of water melons ever
consigned to this point
As a result, melons have been sold
during the past ten days at about halt
tile usual price, and the gain is that
of the community. There were en
ough melons to supply every family
In the community with one or more,
and if you have not had yours, buy
It today. In that manner, you will be
fcouraging a movement that will
c.oan dollars to you.
One of these same firms Is carrying
an ad In this issue. In which you are
advised on the fruit situation. His
theme is addressed to the public In
an effort to help the entire commun
ity, and every word of his statement
Is true. Read it and heed it.
The trait situation is acute,
will be more so, and you should real
ise this and go to your dealer and
talk with him about your needs and I
prepare now to meet them
The problem of the retail merchant I
Is to get goods at anything like a j
reasonable price, and get them Into
the hands of the consumer with
reasonable profit.
Never before was the situation so
difficult as it is today, and the prob
lem is not that of the dealer alone j
tut of the community.
In all the history of Prineville mer-
j We will take good care of all j
mail orders and pack them care-
I fully for shipment.

to care for the needs of the consumer
than today, and the buyers, even of
small Quantities of groceries, clothing
or any other commodity, cannot af
ford to spent one cent of money at
any other point this year.
Prineville is your town, the Prlne
ville merchant is your merchant, and
If you will tell him your needs as
they are, your complaints if you have
any, it will be to the direct advantage
of yourselr most of all, then of the
community, and lastly of the mer
chant. Cooperative shipments, car lot ship
ments, which will enable you to buy
goods at lower prices are not only
possible by you supporting your lo
cal merchant, and it is up to you to
help yourself, if you want help, for
only in .this manner can the merchant
and community help you.
THKY KXOW WHAT THEY WANT
The land owners under the Ochoco
Project showed wisdom and unity of
ation in their vote of 57 to 3 on
the bond issue last Saturday.
The time is past when there is
room for argument with these people
they know what the water will do for
them on these lands, they are satis-
fied and pleased with the progress-
PER POUND I
; being made In getting water to them
'and without display or protest, they
j almost unanimously approve of the
I work of the board, the contractor and
: the engineering force,
j Never since the work started on
thl8 project has there been such unity
of action as Is manifest today, never
I has each dollar expended brought In
more actual returns to the project,
and never has there been the feeling
that exists at this time throughout the
work that the project will not only be
worth all It is costing, but much
more to the land owners.
In the face of all wavering and
, changeable, conditions some reacv
i tionarv attemnts from outside auar-
I ters and a feeling of unrest In the.
j country, the land owners are to bet
.congratulated on their approval of!
, the work of their employees, the en
gineers, the board and the contractor.
They know what they want, why
they want It, and Just how to go about
it to get It. They are satisfied.
Eight thousand rabbits met their i
i death last week in the Boardman i
; country. Drives and poison did the j
. work, according to the report brought ;
back to Heppner by County Agent L.
i A. Hunt. The rabbit evil Is recog
nized as a serious one by all the far
mers In the north end of the county
and oi'KitnUeil efforts are being put
forth to rid the county of this pest.
A cull litis come to the Morrow coun
ty aK.'iit from the reslilunts of Gill
lam county, in the lower end, to help
them fight the rabbit pest, but Mr.
Hunt says help from here will be
poalhle only when "Uillam county
laps over Into Morrow comity."
