The delegates who met at The
Dalles on Saturday, from Wasco,
Sherman, Jefferson, Deschutes and
Klamath counties, to urge the early
construction of The Dalles to Cal
ifornia highway, were surprised and
somewhat forestalled by Highway
Commissioners Booth and Thompson,
who announced that It had been de
cided to begin the work of construct
ion this season and push It to com
pletion as rapidly as possible. i
Commissioner Booth said that the
highway has already been located
from Klamath Falls north to Sand
Creek and that Its location from the
latter point to Warm Springs In
dian reservation would be an easy
natter. He announced that the tie.
partment of Indian affairs and also
the forest service have agreed to as
sist in the construction of the high
way through the forest reserve and
the Indian reservation. Redmond

The Income Tax
The sun was setting In the West,
The day was flitting hence,
And as it went, I saw a gent,
A-sitting on the fence.
"Who are you, aged gent?" I cried,
"And wherefore sit you so
Dour-faced and sad the while you add
Up figures in a row?"
He never raised his eyes at all.
But scribbled on his way,
And muttered: "I must find how high
An income tax to pay."
"How much is It, my worthy sir?"
I queried soft and low.
He answered not, but made a dot
Upon another row,
And muttered: "Rent and wear and
tear
See D and likewise E
But if you'e J. don't mention K,
But add the sum of G
Subtracting total M and Q,
Unless you've filled out K,
In which case try subtracting I,
Of course, omitting J "
I tapped him on the shoulder then,
And tweaked him by the ear.
"The total's what?" He answered not,
And did not seem to hear.
He only sighed: "In case that F
last year was added in,
Omit the J and hop to K
And near the L begin;
But if the L next year you hope
With P-Q to unite.
Subtract the C, but add the T
And X-Y total write."
I spoke again: "Come tell me all!"
He only said "Daggone!"
And adding J, but leaving K,
He tumbled on the lawn.
The wagon came; they picked him up
and carted him away,
And o'er the wheels with frantic
squeals
I heard his wild voice say:
"If year before last J was Q,
Add S, skip V mark O;
Subtracting T, but adding C "
The end I'll nver know.
Dean Collins in the Oregon Voter
The first commercial organization
ever started by women In this local
ity was launched by 11 women in this
city. The men of the city, the women
say, have been somewhat dilatory In
reviving the commercial club which
was suspended here for the period of
the war and the urgent need of an
organization of this kind Is believed
to have prompted this step.
The new organization has not. yet
been named, but the members have
announced their intention of getting
behind the movement for the comple
