A FITTING FINISH
"Me nnd Gott!" Did you ever hear
ot the above expression or read ot it
daring the past four years? An al
leged man, who claimed to be a close
associate ot the Deity, but always
placed himself even above the God ot
all civilized peoples, who was elected
according to his own confession to
lead a chosen people in their task of
conquering and subduing the entire
world, who attempted through com
mercial channels, through that his
toric institution, the American brew
ery, and through propaganda that did
not stop at seditious practices or ev
en sabotage and murder, who a few
hort months ago was revered by
more than a hundred million people
in Central Europe, and feared by
three or four times that number, who
no longer than a week aso was com
mander of the -great Hun military
machine, composed, as he had been
pleased to state, of "supermen" who
could not be defeated in war, who
felt himself called to rule the world
is its entirety, and cause all peace
loving peoples to tremble with tear,
when the name of the great German
war lord was mentioned, he of the
many addresses in which he proclaim
ed that "God is with our wonderful
armies," and that they would ulti
mately be victorious over all comers,
he, William II, Emperor of Bermany,
King of Prussia, ruler of Saxony and
a dozen other little countries in Eu
rope besides many colonies, is today
but Old Bill Hohenzollern, who can
not stay in Germany, dare not go to
Austria, France, England, or Rus
sia, held as a common outlaw in Hol
land, despised by every nation in the
old world and the new alike, a party
to the most disgraceful peace any
ruler ever consented to and await
ing the fate ot an early, and uncer
tain death, that is coming, he knows
not how. May the God you have per
haps defamed more than any other
living man have mercy on your poor,
withered, diseased soul!
RED 'U4WH RHM CLOSED
"DER TAG"
By Rudyard Kipling
(Kipling's poem was never more
timely than today when the German
braggart is seeking to escape the im
pending disaster.)
Tju boasted the day, and you toasted
tli e day.
And now the day has come.
Blasphemer, braggart and coward all.
Little you reck of the numbing ball,
The blasting shell or the white arm's
fall.
As they speed poor humans home
Tou spied for the day, you lied for
the day.
And worked for the day's red
spleen.
Monster, who asked God's aid divine.
Then strewed His seas with ghastly
wine,
Kot all the waters of the Rhine
Can wash thy foul hands clean.
Ton dreamed for the day, you schem
ed for the day.
Watch how the day will go,
Slayer of age, and youth and prime
(Defenseless slain for never a crime)
Thou art steeped in blood as a hog in
slime.
False friend and cowardly foe.
Tou have sown for the day, you have
grown for the day,
Yours is the harvest red.
Can you hear the groans and the aw
ful cries?
Can you see the heaps of the slain
that lies.
And sightless, turned to the flame
split skies,
The glassy eyes of the dead?
Tou have wronged for the day, you
have longed for the day,
That lit the awful flame.
Tis nothing to you that hill and plain
Tield sheaves of dead amid the grain;
That widows mourn for their loved
ones slain,
' . And mothers curse thy name.
But after the day there's a price to
pay
For the sleepers under the sod,
And He you have mocked for many a
day
Listen and hear what He has to say:
"Vengeance is mine, I will repay."
What can you say to God?

REPORT OF CROOK COUNTY
CHAPTER RED CROSS
A Year of Real Work Accomplished
And Excellent Results In A
Financial Way
Following is the Summary of the
work and the financial statement
for the year for the Crook County
Chapter:
Crook County Chapter was organ
ized one year ago Nov. 3rd and re
ceived its charter Nov. 8.
During the year two Branches were
organized, one at Powell Butte and
one at Paulina, and six Auxiliaries,
Bear Creek, Suplee, Grimes Chapel,
Upper McKay, Riverdale, and Rob
erts. All these branches and auxil
iaries have been contributing their
full allotment of work to make up
the chapter's quota.
Our work room has been equipped
with five electric sewing machines
and a cutting machine. The cutting
machine will cut fifty garments at
one time. This lightens very mater
ially the work of the committee in
this line of work.
That you may know something of
the work conmleted bv the wnrklnir
department I submit a statement from
our worKing cnalrman, MrB. R. W.
Rea, from her production report:
Bed shirts, 1,058; Prs. Pajamas,
164; Bed Jackets, 317, Women's
House Gowns, 120; Children's Dress
es, 110; Comfort Kits, 145; Bed
side Bags, 30; Property Bags, 20;
Wash Cloths, 75; Sweaters, 119;
Socks 372 pairs; Gun Wipers, 15000;
Bath Towels, 149; Hand Towels, 160;
Sheets, 50; Handkerchiefs, 173; Nap
kins, 15.
Surgical dressings T-binders,
32; Abdominal bandages, 140; Many
tail Bandages, 330; Tea Towels, 61;
Infant Blankets, 8.
This does not include 1162 surgical
dressings and 600 yards of bandages
shipped to the surgical dreslng, in
Portland, prior to the granting of our
Red Cross charter. Besides these ar
ticles, produced by the Chapter, two
tons of used clothing for the Belgian
relief have been shipped.
In September the Home Service
Section was organized and is now
ready to take up its work in real ear
nest. Representatives for the Sec
tion have been appointed in every
organization in Prineville and
throughout the county to co-operate
with the H. 8. S. in its splendid work.
During the short time the Section
has been working it has contributed
helpful advice and assistance In some
twelve different cases. It is the aim
of the H. S. S. to be to the families
at home what the Red Cross Is to the
soldiers over there.
' We who remain behind depend up
on the courage and efficiency of the
soldier at the front to help win this
war. We owe him debt of grati
tude which we cannot repay and
which he Is not worrying about. But
he will fight better tor knowing that
while he Is away the folks at home
need lack for nothing In time of em
ergency and anxiety, which friendly
Interest and ample resources can sup
ply. The Red Cross can not take his
place, but the Home Service Section
can be depended upon to do many
thing for his family that they can
not do tor themselves and which he
cannot provide for during his ab
sence. We may need only to supply
Information of some kind, but that
will he given promptly and accurate
ly. Whatever it may b that wt shall
have opportunity to do, we shall do
through the 11. 8. S. of the Red Cross.
Through the kindness ot our pat
riotic clttxens we have been able to
establish' headquarters In the Masonlo
building In the room just east of the
work room. There will be someone
In the office In the afternoon of each
day from two to three, who will bs
glad to answer questions In regard to
anv Rod Cross matter.
