It is made a crime for any person to allow weeds as are defined by statute to grow either up on or about the premises or along the county road abutting the premis es occurred, either by the owner or lessee," said District Attorney WIrtx Monday. "These weeds are the quack grass, peny cress, French weed, fan weed, or scale weed, goat weed, Tiptoa weed or Eola weed, or St. John a wort, death weed, poverty weed or marsh elder, Russia a thistle. Canada thistle, Chinese thistle, Chines-? lettuce or prickly lettuce, tumbling or Jim Hill mustard, cocklebur and the stiver salt bush." The penalty for the firt offense ranges from a minimum nf a 1 10.00 to a $50.00 fine, and for the second offense the fine runs from a mini mum of $25.00 i'o a maximum of $100.00. It is not the desire of the county authorities to have to cause the arrest of any person so violating the law in Crook county, but there are many of them, and unless efort is made by them to clean up their premises, such prosecutions must fol low. The object of the statuU Is to ex terminate the weeds, and not to cause any person unnecesary expense or embarrassment by prosecution for a misdemeanor. The road mabter also ' has authority to enter upon ireniiss Infested with the objectionable weeds and clean, them up. A lien against the premises is provided by law for the expense of this cleaning np, which is a first lien next to tha lien for taxes. Although the season is late and the law already violated, the proper spirit can be shown, and much good can be done by killing the weeds and burning the ripened seeds and hushes. MORE TRACTORS NEEDED Oregon farmers need more tract ors. Only about one farmer in a hundred has a tractor available, eith er through ownership or hire, to help him get in his crops. Horses are high1 priced and scarce, and it costs a for tune to feed them. Also, it reqmres much extra labor to handle them as compared with the labor cost of tract or operation. The result Is 'hat farming is lagging in Oregon as com pared with a few years ago. High prices for farm products are not a solution of the problem. The present high prices do not attract the farmer. It costs him more to pro duce than it does to refrain from production and just let things slide. Even with a maximum of patriotic effort on bis part his difficulties are so many, in cash costs and labor shortage, that he can do little com pared with what he would like to do. People who think the farmers as a class are making mints of money are sadly mistaken. In reality it is tak ing the greatest sacrifices on the part I W' 1 Experts Say "ZEROLENE IS BETTER" because it holds better compression, gives better protection to the moving parts and deposits less car bon. Zerolene is the correct oil for all types of automobile engines the correct oil for your automobile. Get our Lubrication Chart showing the correct consis tency for your car. STANDARD OIL COMPANY (California) The Standard Oil E. MARTIN, Special Agent Standard Oil Company REDMOND, ORE. Wlt P Traitors will neiu i" . There are traotora on the market, good tractor at reaaonable price. but the farmers wno neeu ini'm mm have not the ready capital with hteh to buy them. Many farmer would bo willing to aell part of their land if have not the ready capital bv ao doing they count ouy irinum, but there ta no market for the land. In Ohio, the Mate haa ateppod Into t'.ie aituatlon by helping fiuance the purchase of traotora. Aa a result of this more than J.000 tractor wi re placed on farms in that atate durina; the last ix months. With a tractor a farmer can get somewhere. Ho can plow deep, can work up hi land at the best time, and can operate by hi own labor, doing far more than he could accomplish with several hired men and teama, even if he could is't the men and team. The situation In Oregon ta really serloua and either our business bodies, banking Insti tutions, or the state should under take something that would afford re lief. Oregon Voter. W. 8. S. SIGAR CAKDS ISSVKD For the first time since the begin ning of the war, auitar cards are be ing Issued In Prineville. The cards provide for two pounds of sugar per person per month, and they will be collected by the food ad ministrator each month, and the pur chases checked. This Is made necessary because of the fact that many people buy from every store under the old method, and unless there was some cnecu on tnem, the order failed to catch the very per sons for which it was intended. Under the new plan, every Individ ual and every family will be checked up at the end of the month, and all those who have violated the two pound per individual order will be punished. It Is an excellent step, and will get good results. Everyone should asist the administration In Its enforcement. ALL RECORDS BROKEX Livestock prices In Portland mar kets are higher this week than they have ever been. Of course these ex cess prices are due to the war, yet being the market for one of the best livestock countries in the nation, good prices can always be expected. OCHOCO NATIONAL FOREST REVENUES Figures Just received from Port land indicate that the Ochoco Forest is now nearly self-supporting. Re ceipts for last fiscal year amount to almost $15,000. This figure repre sents the revenue from grazing, tim ber sales, special uses, such as pas tures, building sites, etc. Within another year or so receipts will probably almost equal disburse ments (exclusive of special work, such as Federal Roads, etc,) since the increase this year over last is nearly $2,000.. w. a. a.
