On Beveral recent occasions
Prtnevlllp merchants have been
blamed by buyers, who have staled
that prices of grocei :m!cles ore
too hleh. We agree that they are
high, but the fact should he con
sidered that the grocer Is controlled
in many things by the government,
which never happened before. Farm
produce, livestock, lumber and all
articles sold Including labor are
higher than formerly, and they,
with merchandise, will go higher.
The merchant is not In an enviable
position and his actions arc care
fully watched by the government.

IH'KINKSS I'M KIWI.!
No one wanted war of course,
and when it came upon us, the
popular conception of the economic
results was unheardof prices and
impossible market f conditions, anif
panicky times.
The war has gone on long enough
to establish the fact that such
I things as have occurred In the way
i of excessive prices for food stuffs,
I and corners on necessary supplies,
i are not now possible.
It is true that some business
I pirates will attempt such things.
and the results will be far more
satisfactory to them, as has already
been demonstrated in a few in
stances. The result of the war however.
I Is sure to be the greatest .business
j expansion that the United States has
! ever experienced, and Instead of
! the slogan, "Business as I'sual" it
will be business unusual, as gauged
before the war.
The rebuilding of Europe on a
more modern and sanitary basis,
the equipping of the devastated
farms with modern American made
machinery, the iitudernlelng of cit
ies belli great and small, will mean
wonderful demands for many com
modules that were not ll ml lug a
rea-ly market before the war.
We should cease to think In
terms employed before the war, but
adjust our Ideas to conditions as
they now exist, and while our dol
lar will not buy as much al It for
merly did. what we have to sell
brings us more.

Herbert Hoover, through the co
operation of the newspapers of the
I'ulted Statis has proven himself
the greatest propngsudlst In the
world, and as a propaganda la his
business, he has made good to a re
markable degree.
Mr. Hoover was put In charge of
the task of feeding the world, when
thirty live per cent of Its food sup
ply had been consumed In the burn
ing (Ires of war.
He had tin laws, under which he
could compel the substitution of
coarse grains for white lluor, which
the American hud been taught to be
lieve he was entitled to because he
had the money with which to buy
It. but he did secure the results he
wished, by a process of education
Instead of arbitrary law enforce
ment. After lust year's wheat harvest
we had about 10,000,000 bushels
more than we consumed during the
previous twelve monthsless than
2 per cent over our normal supply.
Yet on the last day of May we had
sent to F.urope 140.000,000 bushels
of wheat. This means that patriot
ic AMerlcans saved from their ta
bles In ten months 130,000,000
bushuls. Thus Is shown In the ag
gregate the little savings of 20,000,
000 families.
Formerly the Cnltod States sup
plied 10 per cent of the wheat con
sufcied In Kurope. The last yeur we
were called on to furnish .10 per
cent. Australia was cut off entirely
and South America could not de
liver her quota on account of the
scarcity of shlping. We used to
send 50.000,000 pounds of pork
products over the ocean every
month. Our exports the past two
months were five times as large.
Ill Normal years we shipped to the
ali'-d countries 10,000,000 pounds
of beef monthly. We sent 120.000.
000 pounds In April and the same
quantity In May. These vast quan
tities were saved from American
tables.
