Chautauqua. It is llko the dailv
newspaner, the pi. 'ture theatre nnd
the public school system, it is a pnrt
of the great American scheme or
things.

tures, good music and other uplift
ing things, there is no attraction in
the Chautauqua.
Whether it is a good investment
for the community or not Is beside
the point, yet a careful Investigation
of the facts will disclose the evi
dence that It is a decided asset to
any community, and especially to
Prlneville, from an economic stand
point. Prineville has a record for com
munity effort, and successful con
clusions to every undertaking thnt
is not surpassed in the country, and
the history of the Chautauqua for
1918 will be another chapter In the
book of progress for the community.

stitution that denotes culture, intel
lect, learning. If you don t stand
for It, don't blackmail yourself by
admitting it to anyone!

When Lyceum and Chautauqua
workers talk of allowing their ac
tivities to lapse during the period of
the war they are slackers; in fact,
worse than that they are deserters
for that is what we would call a
soldier If he said he was tired, had
already had too many calls upon his
strength and endurance and there
fore would not continue In the mili
tary service. We arerall soldiers
most of us assigned to civilian du
ties "to keep the home fires burn
ing." We cannot "lay down" on
"an integral part of the national
defense" as President Wilson has
called the Lyceum and Chautauqua
without being traitors to the cause
for which America entered the. war.
We really hhould not hae needed
President Wilson or anyone connect
ed with the AilinlnlHt ration to toll
im -the evidence are and have been
all about us.

Stealing- HrotiKlit to Prlneville
James Hrickey, who was arrested
on the high desert for the alleged
theft of some cattle, was brought to
Prlneville, Friday.
Mr. Hrickey waived hearing and
was released on bail. The date of
bis trial has not been set.
