Anderson Camp No. 17, of Spanish American War Veteran waa called upon to bury with military honors tho first victim of the war with Germany when they laid away the body of tho late John McDowell in tho local ceme tery. The body wa escorted from New 1 York, where he died, by a detail of two enlisted men and a corporal to Redmond where our local under- taker took charge of the body. Immediately Bfter the services In the Baptist Church, the Veterans of the Spanish American War took entire charge of the ceremonies. The casket wa draped with tho American Hug and preceded by the High School Hand and a firing squad of cadet the cortege proceeded to the cemetery, tho Spanish American War Veterans acting as pall bearers and escort. At the grave three volleys were fired and "Taps" soundod after which Dr. J. H. Gervln, acting chaplain, delivered a short address in which he made clear the fact that the German government is responsi ble for the death of this young man, and all others who die In the service of tho stars and stripe in tnis con Diet. They will be disposed of according: to the plan already announced, $40. 000 worth to Portland interests and an equal amount to Prlneville par ties. They will be given In exchange for the certificates which were sold to the amount of $28,000 In this city recently, and the remaining $12,000 of the amount that is to be cared for locally will be taken up in a day or two. The council feels sure ' that the amount thus provided, $80,000, will be sufficient to cover all expenses of putting the road In operation. As quick action is most desirable, both to the council and the people of the city, these bonds had been printed In advance, and were on hand at yesterday's meeting, at which time the arrangements were all completed for the floating of the bonds. Wirtz, expenses RED CROSS SEALS These DESCHUTES COUNTY CASE DISMISSED The quo warranto proceedings brought in the circuit court In the name of Gus Stadig, of Lower Bridge, almost a year ago, and which have been since pending in the circuit court against the organ ization and existence of Deschutes county were dismissed by Judge Duffy last Friday which removes the mutter from the circuit court. In his findings of fact and con clusions of law, Judge Duffy held that the act of the legislature was sufficient to remove all doubt as to the legality of the county, and that the required percentage of the votes were favorable to its establishment in both the old and new counties. Judge Wallace, who is attorney for those opposing the Deschutes county organization, stated that he will appeal the cuse to the supreme court, and will file notice to that effect soon. in cultivation, and the cost of clear ing the remainder will be compara tively light.
