A Remarkable
Invention
It is no longer necessary for the motorist to get stuck. This
little device, it carried in his tool-box, multiplies his power by
73, and makes him Independent of road conditions. If his auto
sticks In the mud, skids into a ditch or overturns, he can right
it in 10 minutes by simply driving thehree stakes in the
ground, attaching
Pull-U-Out
to them and to the auto and giving the ratchet crank a few
easy turns. The stakes will hold, even in very soft ground
and out comes the auto. No trouble, no expense, not even
soiled clothes! This wonderful little device lifts a ton, of dead
weirht, or pulls 60 tons on wheels; yet its shipping weight is
only 28 lbs., and It fits easily into a space 4x6x14 inches.

NOW AT WAR
Six thousand miles from the
scene of hostilities, it is difficult Tor
the people of this state to realize
that we are in the midst of a war
that has as its Issue, the greatest
problem ever faced by humanity,
and that the struggle Is the fiercest
that the world has ever seen.
As the real issues present them
selves it becomes evident that this
nation acted wisely indeed to get
into the con flic t at this time, and'
assist the other nations who love
peace and fairness to humanity, in
stead ot waiting until a Inter date,
and possibly facing the armies of
the kaiser alone.
Crook County has nn every call
that has been made thus, far,
promptly, and is far ahead ot many
communities in this respect.
The quota of men was filled
promptly, the $50,000.00 liberty
loan bonds were subscribed readily.
The Red Cross subscription is
next in order. We are asked to
raise $5000.00 for that purpose, and
it must be done without question.
No more important work can be
imagined than that the lied Cross
performs.
Thousands upon thousands of
lives are being saved In Europe- hy
this organization, and since a large
number of our boys will be on the
battle fields there in a short time,
it is necessary that the calt for
funds be met promptly.
Next week is Red Cross week,
and everyone will be given an op
portunity to assist. Meet the first
call with your subscription, for the
people who are donating time and
the use of cars in making the can
vass are no more interested than
you are. It is our war, do your bit.

(By Albert Schreder)
The Item reported In another
column of The Journal relative to
the road proposed by Mr. Luthy, I
1 believe will bear a few comments
from one who can look on without
a view of personal benefit.
In my travels through the Bear
Creek country, I have had an un
equalled opportunity to talk to the
people about the road systems and
to find out their ideas.
This fact seems to be unanimous
we need better roads. But right
there the unanimity of opinion
J ceases.
i In my talks with the people no
general system of road improvement
i seems to meet with general en
couragement.
At one home a plan for road Im-
I provement would be heartily en
! dorsed, while at probably the very
j next place it would be bitterly
' scored."
j To one just looking on it would
'seem that everybody, is willing to
see a road built as far as their door
but if it goes through their field or
helps some neighbor a little farther
up the line, that part of the road
either does not have their support,
or has their active hostility to com
bat, j
This sounds far-fetched, "people,
but you will have to go through the
mill as I have done during the last
three weeks to realize how true it is.
How the County Court can possi
bly hope to accomplish anything in
the face of this is a mystery.
It has now shown a disposition to
act, in fact is anxious to relieve the
present situation. Are YOU going
to assist or knock.
The question is now strictly up
to you. The date of the hearing Is
set. Sections of the country bene
fited by this road should send dele
gations to this term and assist all
they can. Those who cannot go
personally to the Court should send
a letter stating their feelings. It
is certainly worth a two cent stamp
to you to have this improvement
Send a letter to County "Court,
Prineville, Oregon, letting them
know your opinions. Boost, don't
knock.
If you are opposed to this road
point out distinctly in what way it
could be improved upon with the
limited amount of money on hand
Sign your name to your letter.

THE STORE OF SERVICE
State Game Warden, Carl D.
Shoemaker, was in Prineville Monday.
He says that the supply of pheas
ants for this part of the state will
be increased this year, and that a
large number of trout fry will be

the year.
The fish ladder around the falls
at Shearer has been practically com
