DO yOU KNOW THESE
STATEJLAWS EXIST?
At the opening of each legislative
session in Oregon, and we presume
It is t'ue same in every state, we
hear many good legislative resolu
tions among the most prominent of
which is well described by the
slogan of "fewer and saner laws",
but which always seem to be for
gotten after the first week of the
session, like many other good an
nual resolutions. This has led
many editors and laymen to stigma
tize the legislature as a sort of po
litical malady recurring biennially
(or which no corrective or curing
toxin has yet been discovered.
Therefore we have thought it
might be "pertinent to make the
following inquiries:
Do you know Mr. Business Man
that it is now unlawful to make any
false statement in an advertisement
regarding the price, quality of
goods or purpose of sale?
Do you know Mr. Cattle Trailer
that it is unlawful to use profane
and abusive language on the public
highway?
Do you know Mr. Inn Keeper
that you are subject to indictment
by the grand jury for your failure
to provide fire escapes or ropes for
rapid exit In case of fire and the
penalty is $50 for each day that
this is neglected?
Do you know also that It is un
lawful not to provide your beds
with sheets 9 feet long under a
similar penalty?
Do you know that it is unlawful
to burn trash, slashings or start a
bon-flre between June 1 and Octo
ber 1 each year?
Do you know, Mr. Rancher, that
you must keep the hides of all beef
slaughtered by you unaltered for
30 days before you can dispose of
Bame?
Do you know that you cannot buy
a revolver without getting a permit
from the authorities and that they
must not be displayed by mer
chants? Mr. Auto Driver do you know
that It is unlawful to drive faster
than 25 miles an hour on any pub
lie highway or street in the State
of Oregon? Or more than 8 miles
when passing any other vehicle
drawn by horses?
Mr. Stockman, do you know it is
unlawful to drive stock over a
highway leaving it filled with
stones, and that it is unlawful to
drive more than 20 head of stock
over a bridge at any one time?
Do you know that It is unlawful
to keep any mail order liquor house
advertisements lying around?
