As the time of election draws near, the Newsom Creek Rabbit club which is sponsor for the rat and rabbit bounty measure which will be voted upon, is becoming active in behalf of their bill. HeUel. head of the extension department of the Oregon agricultural college, has announced that a new monthly extension bulletin issued by the college will appear for the first time November 1. Josephine county's beet harvest be gan In earnest this week, and ship ments of the sugar beet from as far north as Sutherlin and south to Ash land are expected to arrive In Grants Pass daily during the season. The largest and finest prune crop ever grown in Oregon has now been safely gathered. The crop, in ton nage, has run close to 40,000,000 pounds. The average for recent years has not been over 25,000,000 pounds. The state conference of the Con gregational church, in session at The Dalles, voted to recommend to the trustees of Pacific university, Forest Grove, that they endeavor to effect consolidation of that institution with Albany college (Presbyterian) of Al bany, the consolidated Institution to be operated as a non-denominational college. Chapman Warns Voters of Single Tax The people of Oregon who own land and are interested in the up building of the homes of the state are confronted with a measure at the November election that would in effect deprive them of their homes. It is the first measure on the ballot under "Proposed by Initi ative Petition," heading, and the way to defeat it is to vote 307 X No. C. C. Chapman of the Oregon Voter recently mailed to all Granges the following resolutions: WHEREAS, the so-called People's Land & Loan Law, if adopted by popular vote in November, would become part of the Constitution of Oregon, and WHEREAS, it would make all farm-owners and home-owners mere tenants of the state, possessed of empty titles and burdened with the obligation of paying each year the full rental value of their homes and lands into the public treasury, and WHEREAS, by its provisions for loaning $1,500 cash without inter est for five years to- anyone who with his family has failed to ac cumulate property of the total of $2,250, it penalizes thrift and puts a premium upon shiftlessncss and extiavagance at taxpayers expense, therefore be it, RESOLVED, that we urge our NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN To the legal voters of School District No. 1 of Crook County, State of Oregon, that a SCHOOL MEETING of said District will be held at School house, Prineville, Ore., on the 9th day of November, 1916, at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon to vote on the proposition of levying a special district tax.
