THIS PAPER REPRESENTED FOR FOREIGN ADVERTISING-BY THE GENERAL OFFICES NEW YORK AND CHICAGO BRANCHES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES OFFICERS GET BOUQUET. The "Oregon Voter", political periodical published in Portland and which is not classed as a pro hibition paper, in a recent isssue had the following to say regarding the present prohibition law and its enforcement in this state: "While we question both the wis dom and the justice of prohibition, we admit frankly that considerable good has come of it in Oregon. "These good results have come from strict enforcement of the new law. Let not this enforcement re lax. Public sentiment must stand as a unit for vigorous prosecution of every bootlegger or law-evader. "Experience in other states is that prohibition does not prohibit; that there has been more-drunk-eness under prohibition than there was before; but invariably it has been because the law was not en forced, except at first. "The state has taken a big job on its hands, and unless it makes good by continued strict enforcement, our last condition will be worse than our first." In Crook county public sentiment has stood behind the law officers. Not a prosecution for bootlegg ing or for a violation of the pro hibitory statute undertaken by District Attorney Wirtz in Crook county has failed, and several cases have been taken up. As the Bend Press said in its issue of June 9, with law enforcing officers such as we have in Crook county, "there is but little danger of flagrant violations." The officers that are endeavoring to en force the law in Crook county should be commended so that "strict enforcement may be continued." PROMS BUSY. Commencing on October 1, temperance leaders have been hold ing meetings throughout the cen tral and western part of the county in the interests of the "absolute prohibition amendment" and at tempting to show the people the unjust features of the "Brewers' Amendment" which would prac tically defeat the temperance issue in the state. The first meeting was held at Terrebonne on the first of the month, and others have followed at various points. The final meeting of the cam paign is advertised for the Hippo drome at Bend on November 5, at which time they plan to have the building, which will seat 1000 people, filled if possible. They expect victory on both measures, passage of the first and defeat of the second. OPPOSE BREWERS SCHEME "The proposed amendment per mitting the manufacture, sale and delivery of malt liquors in Oregon would permit the breweries to es tablish agencies selling in the "original package" a (single bottle or a whole case) , Those "agencies" would be virtually saloons. The measure is so inconsistent with the present law that it would necessi tate the drafting of an entire new liquor code by the legislature." (Signed) W. T. Miller Grants Pass. W. A. Bell The Dalles. V . ..11' may De a cozen in a town; to sen in original packages a pint or a quart of beer at one time, which, necessarily, under the amendment, would allow the same customer to come tc the same place 28 consecu tive times in 28 consecutive days to drink 24 quarts of beer. That such places would become public nui sances for some time after the law goes into effect, and until new laws by the next legislature are made, cannot be questioned, because, under the present laws, such new selling agencies have never been considered, and many weak spots will be found in the present laws in attempting to regulate thorn. Every Tom, Uick and Harry, re sponsible and ir-responsible, would be in the beer-selling business, from November 8 to the time the legislature acts, and the result would be anything but pleasant to the officers of the law. Had the bill provided for the sale of 24 quarts of beer in one parcel and in one sale each 28 days to the cus tomer, by Oregon brewers, so as to protect a home industry, it would have presented another question, but as the bill now stands, -it is dangerous."
