A Chicago editor says he would like to hear a preacher pray in con versational tones, as if the Lord, were present in the room and not a long way off. Yes, and then some son of a sea cook would com plain because the preacher was not in earnest. People are hard to please. The Methodist used to be too demonstrative, the Presbyte rians too formal and cold. Yet the Methodists and Presbyterians kept right on attracting people who liked their style. Most of the preachers these days are dignified in the pulpit and they reach only the people who like that style. When Billy Sunday comes to town and makes a great hullabaloo, the quiet people criticise his words and methods, but the demonstrative people hit the trail at the rate of a j V micoii I O rlnir j Ycu will find a lot of people who j 1rivp an sntomnhilp as nuiet'.V as I possible, and who run at a conserv ative rate. Then you run across a fellow who opens his muffler and hikes down the road hour. Tastes differ. 40 miles an DO YOUR PART. There is an ordinance and a state law, that prohibits the practice of growing a crop of weeds on your : vacant lot, and on the front and rear of lots that are not vacant also. The council has caused to be pub lished during the past few weeks notices to that effect, and weed notices have been mailed to indi- viduals and many have complied with these laws Others have not. Some of the largest property holdings in the city are covered with a tangled growth of weeds and the owners are in some in-; stances at least, ready to criticise j the council for their shortcomings, yet will not comply with these re quests without legal action. Any town or community is just what its residents make it. If the people have a community pride, and care fdr their own property as it should be cared for without the n?cessity of enforcing laws of this nature, the vown becomes one where people. like to live and where : property values are much higher than other towns. It is very evident that many of ; those who own property in Prine ville are not doing their share. Think it over, and cut the weeds. IT PAYS TO TRADE AT HOME. To demonstrate the advisability of keeping home money at home, the Otsego County Advance, Gay- MIiU nnf o cilvov Hnllar In n leather case and spent it with a local merchant. It was requested that this merchant pay some local bill with it and the recipient pay another bill or use it in making change any way, just so the dollar was kept at home. A record of its "wanderings" is being kept and published weekly in the Advance. The idea is a good one and the weekly stories of the work it has done will be surprising to every reader. Metropolitan papers have tried out the plan with success, and when a dollar can be traced in a big city, surely it can' be in a smaller one. Workmen the north jetty at the mouth of the Sluslaw hag been com pleted, and the equipment is being moved to the south side of the river, where the contractors, the Miami Quarry company, are building the south jetty. The Fruit Growers Union at Salom last week held an order for 40 cars of prunes U. be shipped to a California concern at a good price and everyone felt that the prune crop was well disposed of in this community. Today the order is cancelled and unless something develops at once, there will be an immense loss among the fruit growers there. The same condition prevails throughout the fruit growing sec tions because or the strike situ- on. In the Central Oregon country, things are different. Our re sources are less perishable, are handled" on a larger margin of profit, and the unsettled condition ! of the main arteries of transDorta- .. ... . It has often been said that diver sified farming is trie only safe method for the tiller of the soil and this condition applies to a com munity as well. Central Oregon has as many varied and substantial resources as any community in the northwest. Livestock of all kinds, grain, hav, potatoes and lumber unite in mak ing a variety of resourse that in sure stable conditions at all times.
