BRANCHES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES
FAIR PLAY.
While there will be those who
will not agree with the line drawn
by the joint East-Side-West-Side
committees at Bend Monday night,
none who watched the workings of
those men and who know of the
facts can say that the feeling of
fair play did not predominate.
The East Side committee fought
stubbornly for the lines which were
agreed upon by these same com
mittees at a meeting held a week
previous, and while the committee
of 25 Bend men voted with but
one dissenting voice to support the
same line during the afternoon on
Monday, the Bend men insisted on
giving in to changes that would
satisfy more people along the lines.
The agreement to these changes
was made by the committee from
. the East Side only after hours of
deliberation and after he.iring the
petitions and from delegates direct
from every community represented.
The work of the committee of
seven -xho were so fairly selected
from the eastern half of the county
was always in the open and abso
lutely clean, and everyone who
has watched the matter will admit
that they are able men,' and that
their work was well done.
A CLEAR CASE.
Occasionally there occurs in the
day's news, pathetic stories that
have a strong human appeal, inter
mingled with the commonplace oc
curences. One such is an article that gives
the detail! of a suit for $10,000
that has been filed by the mother
of six children against the owners
of a saloon before the prohibition
days, which statement alleges that
the plaintiff's husband had been
ruined by the illegal purchase of
liquor from the defendants and is
now an inmate of the state insane
asylum.
The press is commenting some
what freely on this matter, because
of the fact that the suit is brought
and not because the father of those
six children was ruined, and became
a decided liability to the state in
stead of a breadwinner and a good
citizen. Men have been ruined in
this way since the days of the first
saloon, but to think of bringing a
suit against a nice friendly saloon
cwner!
The very nerve of that wife and
mother of only a half dozen
children! No doubt these men
.owned one rd those "nice clean
orderly places" that we so often
hear about and had a sign over
a side door that said "Family
Entrance." Run purely in the
interests of the" family of course.
Looking more particularly to family
income probably.
It matters little about the result
of the suit. That a cash damage
is due the family there can be no
question. But there is a court
of justice where these men and
others who have been prominent
will not be able to have much in
fluence, where tiiey will not be able
. to assist in the selection of the
jury, and there real justice will
finally be done. .
LOST.
There has been lost to Crook
county, we hope only temporarily
however, one perfectly good har
mony meeting. Redmond had the
first one Prineville followed a
month later by a banquet which
made up in numerical attendance
what it lacked in harmony, and
Bend's turn came in June. Under
the conditions it might be more
appropriate to hold this third meet
ing in October, but we leave the
date entirely with Bend.
Hundreds of deaths in the cities
from the heat, and the loss of . and
damage to crops everywhere but
in Oregon is but added proof that
this is the best state in the land,
and a look over the Central Oregon
country will convince anyone that
this is the best part of the state.
