It is a regrettable fact that there
has been some necessary delay in
li-.o matter of floating the bond
issue voted by the citi7.ens recently
for the purpose of building a rail
road from Prineville to the Oregon
Trunk line.
It is of course a big undertaking,
one that requires considerable in
the way of preliminaries, and many
important steps are involved.
It is a task that no member of
the present council dreamed of at
the time of his election, yet every
man of them is ready and willing
to sacrifice his time and funds if
necessary to make the venture "tie
that will be carried through to a
successful conclusion.
The people had faith in these
men when they were elcted, and
they are to be commended upon the
precautionary measures they are
taking in this important matter
that could if handled in an improp
er manner, mean a monument of
mismanagement and disgrace to the
city.
It is said by some that the people
wanted the money spent for a rail
road, and that is a fact, but the
council cannot be honestly criticized
for waiting until they get the
money before they contract to
spend it.
Every step that they have taken
has been in the open and the fact
that they are considering more than
one plan for the construction of
this road, shows their good faith
and business ability and for such
they are entitled to praise arid
praise only.

Crook County's littlo In : tber,
Jefferson County has 27 ! v:u o'.ti
zens who are willing to sacrifice
their Persona! business and serve
the county as officials. There are
five republicans who would be sher
iff, and three aspirants for superin
tendent of schools, all of those be
ing ladies. Two of them are re
publicans and the third a democrat.
One is Ethel Klann, a graduate of
the C. C. H. S. who is well known
here.
There is a total of 35 candi

ROBERT V, SERVICE
Of Baker, Candidate for Public
Service Commissioner
To begin with the railroads djn't
want him on this commission for
he has hammered them too often
when they were wrong to epxect
their support, but if the common
people do give him the necessary
vote to elect him he proposes to do
as follows: .
He will be absolutely fair with
the railroads for they are entitled
to and shoiild be given a "square
deal."
He will defend the interests of
the common people against unlaw
ful encroachments by our public
servants and will bend every effort!
to the end, that, the public has the
benefit of an economical adminis
tration of the uffiiirs, its railroads
and utilities and that the business,
for which they were chartered, he
conducted honestly, without dis
crimination and at reasonable-rate.
Kntes arc higher in Oregon than
those charged on the first rai road
operated by steam und opened to
public traffic.
All merchandise L. C. L. ship
ments on the primitive railroad fur
a 25 mite haul was $1.25, on the
O.-W. R. & N. it is $S.13 and on
the Sumpter Valley railroad it is
$13.23. ,
Rates today are the highest in
railroad history, while the cost of
produce, the "ton mile" (the unit
of transportation) is the lowest.
This shows the need of regulation,
Robert Service has had five years
experience as an expert accountant.
16 years of wholesale shipping
business and eight years in the
study and practice of law, almost
exclusively on the subject of "Rail
road Rate Regulation" as shown
by his record.
He stands high in his community
and is considered one of the best
qualified men in the state to fill
this position.
A vote for him is a vote for the
best interests of the common peo
ple and he would like to serve the
masses one term. His slogan on
the ballot is "Regulate, give a fair
return on honest capital, nothing
on watered stock." Paid Advertise- j

POWELL BUTTE.
Few communities in the country
have forged ahead like Powell
Butte. A dozen years ago, the fer
, tile country that is now referred to
as Powell Butte, was considered
worthless by al.mst everyone.
Today no part of the county has
better homes, or what is even more
to the point, more homes to the
square mile, than this neighbor
hood. Many things of a community in
terest have been realized. Rural
mail service, telephone connection,
good schools and Sunday scnools,
and with the celebration which will
be held there tomorrow night, a
community hall which will be used
for all gatherings which cannot be
accommodated in the school build
ing, will be given to the public,
t All of these things have beenj
achieved, and many more will be
realized through co-operative com
munity effort. Other communities,
both rural and urban, in this and
ether counties can well pattern
after Powell Butte.

BASEBALL.
It is with a feeling of pride that
the citizens of Prineville tell you
of the repeated victories of their
ball team.
Consulting the history of past
events, it seems that very few
games have been lost by the local
teams during the past five years.
Occasionally a game is lost on a
foreign field, but on the home dia
mond, seldom.
These results may be attributed
to thre . things. First of course,
the ability of the individuals, and
their never failing faith. Second,
because of their ability to organize
and deliver the best and smoothest
team work throughout the game,
and last, but not least, the never-
failing faith of the Prineville fan, for the J

The office of Circuit Judcre. for
Crook and Jefferson Counties, was
created in 1915, and T. E. J. Duffy,
was appointed by Governor Withy
combe to fill the position. Although
Judge Duffy register? as a demo
crat it may be noted, that his ap
pointment was made by-a republi
can governor, who among a great
number of people regards such office
as nonpartizan. Judge Duffy, en
tered upon the discharge of the
duties of such office, giving up his
private practice of law, to devote
all of his time to it, and it can be
safely said that he has administered
such office fairly, impartially and
in a business like manner. It would
therefore s eem no more than right,
in view of his record, that he be
nominated am eiecied to succeed
himself for a further term. Paid
