A RECORD
A dozen years ago, the Crook
County High School was an institu
tion with a mere hamlfull of
pupils, one which had just been es
tahliscd. By many it was predict
ed that the institution would fail,
as had other efforts to establish
schools above the grades. The iso
lated location of Prineville at that
time was to the disadvantage of the
school, some said, and many reasons
were cited why a successful school
could not be located here.
The answer is found in the debate
of last Friday evening in which
the Crook County high proved it
self superior to all like schools in
the entire vast territory east of the
Cascades and which puts them
within one contest, that with a
Jefferson team, of the state cham
pionship. This school, like most such insti
tutions that have become really im
portant, has been the outgrowth
cf a need, the result of cooperative
effort, able instructors at all times,
and a good and loyal board. We
predict a future that will make the
C. C. H. S. famous throughout the
West. . -
IT'S HERE!
Progress comes fast when it
starts; very fast indeed. This has
been demonstrated by the record
made by Bend during the past year.
Saw mills and various other de
velopments have followed thick and
fast, all of which Prineville is
pleased to see.
But Prineville is to have a burst
of speed, an era of progress also,
and it is now at hand. The trriga
ti m district is progressing rapidly,
the railroad matter is developing
very satisfactorily and on the heels
of this development will follow the
Rogers mill.
'Other developments are sure,
but we hesitate to boast. The only
safe method is to watch Prineville.
The Journal advised you to do this
several months ago. It is good ad--.vice
yet.
Prineville was visited this week
by J. W. McCulloch, who is one of
the six candidates for the office of
public service commissioner from
Eastern Oregon.
Mr. McCulloch is a clean man of
mature years, a man who has re
ceived tht endorsement of many
prominent men where he is well
known, who no doubt, has ample
ability to conduct the office to
which he aspires without question.
He is a resident of Ontario, and
has a record for the practice of law
in that part of the state that is not
.excelled anywhere. He is a very
likable sort of an individual, one
who will get votes wherever he
goes. He has a wife and five child
ren. Don't forget Chautauqua week.
July 3 to 8 this year. Comes just
at the regular time to celebrate,
and will be a great event. The
program offered here this year is
the best ever given outside of the
large cities. Come, sure!
Then, there is the county fair this
fall. Remember this when you
plant your garden. One man took
h.jme $43 in premiums last year,
and all the prize winning products
came off of less than an acre. And
look at the advertising too.
The city well is next,
should be a gusher.

I NEWS FROM THE SCHOOLS
C. C. II . S. NOTES.
Sunt. Haughman is in receipt
of a letter from the high school of
Milton, Oregon, challenging our
debating team to fa debate on the
present question. Milton is not in
the league but offers expenses and
choice of side to see what they can
do with the C. C. II. S. Mr.
Baughman plans to accept and de
bate thorn on the way to Eugene
which will afford good practice as
the affirmative side' is more diffi
cult to present.
The decision over Enterprise was
a pleasant revenge, for last year
the result was reversed leaving the
local high school in third place.
The senior address given in as
sembly Wednesday was made by
Clinton Huston. He explained the
development of the moving picture
fihv. along interesting and eduea
tional lines which showed some
study on the work. Clinton is
operator at the Lyric.
Boys who are interested in "track
are urged to report for practice.
If you are not proficient now train
ing will fit you for a place next

created in 1915,'and T. E. J. Duffy,
was appointed by Governor Withy
combe to fill the position. Although
Judge Duffy register? as a demo
crat it may be noted, that his ap
pointment was made by a republi
can governor, who among a great
number of people regards such office
as nonpartizan. Judge Duffy, en
tered upon the discharge of the
duties of such office, giving up his
private practice of law, to devote
all of his time to it, and it can be
safely said that he has administered
such office fairly, impartially and
in a business like manner. It would
therefore s eem no more than right,
in view of his record, that he be
nominated and elected to succeed
