THIS PAPER REPRESENTED FOR FOREIGN ADVERTISING BY THE GENERAL OFFICES NEW YORK AND CHICAGO ERANCHES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES Political ' Announcements IRRIGATION. The idea has been advanced by tl.jjc .n'erested recently, that the canals and laterals for the Ochoco irrigation project should be con structed before the dam or dams are built. To support this plan is indeed some very good argument. Since the district has been cre ated there has been enounh water run down the McKay and Ochoco, to the sea, to have irrigated all the lands in tne district for more than a season. Had the canals been built, this water, or a small part of it at least, could have been put onto the lands which would have insured at least one big crop, a crop of grain that would under the present market . conditions make a large payment on the cost of the construction. The construction of these canals will be a small part of the cost of the project, and flood waters from the streams mentioned above would produce part of the benefit which could perhaps be realized by 1917. Al'NE FOR COMMISSIONER. The announcement of Theodore Aune for commissioner on the re publican ticket puts an unlooked for light on the campaign for Jie com missionership. It has been conceded that a candi date from some other part of the county than Prineville for the po sition would be the proper thing, and the reelection of Commissioner Overturf was satisfactory to many o! the Prineville people, but the an nouncement noted above, following that of Ernest T. Luthy which was made recently, all three of whom are good men and well qualified, puts a new light on the situation. Prineville voters are well satisfied with the representation they have on the board, and will perhaps not take an active part in the contest between these candidates. Public School Notes. Zanda Hendrickson, Reporter The ladies of the Presbyterian church gave the proceeds of some punch sold at the last Parent Teachers' meeting to the athletic fund of the grades. This amounted to 80 cents and will be spent in aid ing the equipment of the play grounds. The public school boys have just finished making and painting a dozen new hurdles. They also are making new standards for the high jumps In addition to this a new bamboo vaulting pole has been purchased for the pole vault. The upper grade boys have expressed a willing ness to donate their services and level off enough of the play ground to have a tennis court. The princi pal has promised tbern that he "ill furnish the net and tape if they will do the work. Rei Powell is as sisting in this work. Pupils in all the grades will hold a declamatory contest on the 14th of April in order that the three who are going to represent Prineville in the Redmond athletic meet may be chosen. T'o new drums, a base and a snare, have been ordered for the school. These should be here some time during the next week. Easy. Frleud Suy. J.Duffy, was appointed by Governor Withy combe to fill the position. Although Judge Duffy register? as a demo crat it may be noted, that his ap pointment was made by a repilM can governor,' who among a great number of people regards such office as nonpartizan.. Judge Duffy, en tered upon the discharge of the duties of such office, giving up his private practice of law, to devote all of his time to it, and it can be i safely said that he has administered J such office fairly, impartially and i in a business like manner. It would therefore s eem no more than right, in view of his record, that he be nominated and elected to succeed himself for a further term. Paid Advertisement. DR.5R E.
