Notice is hereby given that the lands described below, embracing 90 acres, within the Ochoco National Forest, Oregon, will be subject to settlement and entry under the pro visions of the homestead laws of the United States and the act of June 11, 1906 (34 Stat. 233 ), at the United States land office at The Dalles, Oregon, on February la, 1916. A..y settler who was actually and in good faith claiming any of sa;d land for agricultural purposes prior to January 1, 1906, and has not abandoned same, has a prefer ence right to make a homestead entry for the land actually occupied. A new general offensive along a front of almost 100 miles has been undertaken in the Cau casus by reinforced Jtusslan columns, according to an official statement Is sued at the Turkish war office, which said: "On the Caucasus front the enemy, heavily reinforced, commenced a gen eral offensive on January H. The fighting, which Is taking place over a front of nearly 100 miles between Kar adach, south of the A rasa river, and leham, south of Milo, Is developing favorably for us. "Two Russian attacks near Kara dach, south of Kogij, on the 13th, re suited in the complete defeat of the enemy, who was compelled to flee in disorder. Prisoners taken at this point say that during four days' fighting each of their regiments lost at least 800, dead." Petrograd, via London. An official statement given out says: "On the Caucasus front in the course of the fighting January 14, we cap tured 20 Turkish officers and more than 400 men, a quantity of war and engineering material and provisions, one heavy gun and seven other guns and eight machine guns." SUBMARINE KILLS 4 New York. Four mes were killeu and 10 others injured, five of them dangerously. In an explosion which oc curred oo the submarine E-2 while the craft was undergoing repairs In dry dock at the New York navy yard. One of the men killed was an enlisted electrician and the other three civilian workers. The men were at work In the bat tery compartment of the E-J, discharg ing the new Edison batteries through a rheostat to measure the voltage, and the explosion occurred in that com partment while they were working there. A statement Indicating that the new Edison storage battery was not in any way responsible for the explosion on the submarine E-2 at the New York navy yard was made by Miller Reese Hutchinson, chief engineer for Thomas A. Edison, and a member of the naval consulting board.
