THANKSGIVING Today the nation is observing the justom established years ago of elcbrating and returning thanks , lor the blessings of the year. This year America has much for which to be thankful. We of cen tral Oregon have received prehaps more than our quota of the good things durng the year. Each individual has perhaps more lo be thankful for than he realizes m first thought. After all the most tilings for which we should be most Ihankful, good health, right living and many other things are governed Surgely within ourselves, and if we Sate'but little" to be thankful for, 1 is our own fault in many vstances. PROHIBITION A few short years ago, any indi vidual who announced himself for prohibition was at once branded as a crank, or in the modem term as a "nut". Times have changed to the point that anyone who hesi tates to recognize the right in the prohibition move is looked upon largely as the pioneer advocate andcr the former condition. The same change has been felt by the newspapers of the land. Now leading dailies which profess to be wet, of which there are yet dimin ishing few, remain so for policy reasons only, at the same time ad- litttng :n their editorial columns that nation prohibition is right and should cary. All three of the Port land dailies have been strong in tneir statements on this question luring the past ten days. Anyone who will give the idea erious consideration will admit that the United States will be forced to very soon follow the lead of Russia, Trance and other countries of the world, and "take the pledge" and Aat very shortlj . A safe way to assist is to vote for no man who is known to be "wet" PRINEVILLE'S RAILROAD The committee which waited He Likes It. Jefferson County Budget is Less The budget is being advertised in Jefferson county, and is of interest to everyone in this part of the state because of the statements made con cerning the taxes for the year after the division of the county was ef fected. These statements varied all the way from an ' estimated reduction ! of the taxes to one half the amount ( for 1914 to doubling them up to three and four times the amount, ; according to the views of the speakers on the matter of county .. . . i division. The facts are that the amount which they figure will be necessary to raise for the coming year will ' make the taxes some 10 to 15 per ' cent lower than they were last year. These statements are made by the ' officials of Jefferson county, it may be that the saving will be less be- fore the expiration of the year.
