Frank Menefee, who was district attorney in this county a number of years ago, was sentenced in the fed eral court in Portand on Monday to a term of one year and ten days in the McNeil Island penitentiary. Menefee was convicted along with other officials of the United States Cashier Company, on a charge of using the mails to defraud, and by the evidence introduced, it was shown that more than $1,000,000 was secured from some 3,500 per sons throughout the northwest ai subscriptions to the stock of the company. Although the money was actually received by the company, all but Borne $200,500 was paid to the agents who sold the stock and the remainder has been either squander ed or used in defending the suit. It is said that Menefee is practic ally penniless, and it 'may be that he will be unable to raise the funds necessary to make the appeal to a higher court, and will commence do ing time at the expiration of the period given in which to appeal. The pupils of the Public School express their hearty appreciation to Mr. Lafolletteof the Ochoeo Cream ery for the delicious treat of ice cream that he sent us last Monday. Each pupil in school brought a dish and spoon after dinner and follow ing the afternoon recess they were all given a treat. The slide on the playgrounds has been repai-ed and now long lines of pupils are again making use of it. The "giant stride" has been equip ped with new ropes, thus obviating any possibility of the ropes breaking and causing injury to any one. Last Thursday no absences were recorded in any grade above the first. The attendance so far has been exceptionally good. In the eighth grade there have been twenty-six days in which no one was absent or tardy, a total of but three days ab sence to date. The fourth grade follows a close second, with twenty- three perfect days. The sixth grade organized their clsss October 13, and John O'Kelly was elected president, Madge Rowel I secretary, and Marjory Wilson treasurer. Thev are now busy work ing on their pennant for their room. Delmar Lewis, while playing on the rings Sunday afternoon broke his arm. The sixth grade boys are proving to the girls that they are quite as capable of sewing as they are. Friday afternoon the girls of the sixth grade went on a picnic with their teachers; after their bounte ous feed they went on a long hike andfinally reaching their homes about 7:30. A splendid time was en joyed by all. Verl Shattuck was hurt last week causing him to lose a week of school, and has not yet returned.
