Pae 6 ' CROOK COUNTY JOURNAL The City Mrs. Eva Bean is in the city from Eugene. Jesse Milton was in Prineville the last of the week. . Mrs. Adeline Yancey spent Sun day with friends in Redmond. Mrs. Frank Prine is in Prineville from her home at Lewiston, Idaho. . Miss Viola Freil was a visitor at the E. A. Davenport home last Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. T. F. McCallister and daughter Daisy spent Sunday in Prineville. L. M. Bechtell, Dick Darling and 0. C. Hyde are the purchasers of Oakland light six cars during the .past two weeks. C. F. Smith and F. S. Hoffman, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Hoffman, left Tuesday for Pendleton where they wlifspend the week. School day . at the fair is Friday October 8. The children are urged to bring all the exhibits they have and place them on display. I wish to thank the people of this city for the many kindnesses shown me during my recent afflictions. J. M. Siry. An assistant will be required in the commercial department of the high school. There are 68 pupils taking the commercial coll 6e. Sunday School at the Presbyterian church next Sunday at 10 o'clock. Christian Endeavor in the evening ' at 6.30. Fredrick Rice, leader. L. M. Heathman of Bend is in the county jail here on a charge of passing a bad check for $30 in that city on the First National Bank there. The Ladies Annex will give a re ception to the teachers and strangers in the city at the Club hall Saturday afternoon from 2.30 to 5 o'clock. Rev. C. P. Bailey will preach at the Baptist church next Sunday at 11 A. M. and 7.30 P. M. There will be a basket dinner in the base ment after the morning services, to which everyone is welcome. Representative McCall of Boston v was yesterday nominated as the re publican candidate for governor of "Massachusetts by a safe lead over his nearest opponent. Mr. McCall Jg.H. McCall's father of this city . and is a power in politics in his . state... . f The barn and contents on the Mace & Cofoid ranch four miles north of this city were destroyed by fire about 3 o'clock Monday morning. There was no sign of fire when T. S. Bar nes passed the place at midnight, but when Mr. Mace was awakened some three hours later, the building was a mass of flames. There is no clew to the origin of the fire. A letter received from Rev. W. L. Van Nuys stated that he will arrive in this city to begin his duties as pastor of the Presbyterian church about the middle of October Miss Goldie Goff of Prineville, and A.W. Helms of Vancouver were married at the latter place on Sep tember, 18. Harvey Cyrus returned to his home at Sisters the last of the week He will be in Prineville again dur ing the county fair, and will assist at Kamstra's store during the week. Arthur and Sylvian Michel and Leland Belknap left the first of the week for Pendleton where they will visit the Round Up. Leland will go from Pendleton to Portland where he will enter school for the winter. The suit brought against Ralph Porfily by his sister in the circuit court was dismissed without trial yesterday, the facts plainly showing that there was a "frame up" to get the fees from Mr. Porfily. Mr. and Mrs. T. M .Baldwin left the first of the week forLos Angeles where they will go for Mr. Baldwin's health. Rheumatism and other com plications made a change of climate for a time imperative. The young business women will glveavitnner at Hotel Prineville tonight at which the welfare of Prineville will be discussed. Full particulars of the meeting will be printed in the next isssue of The Journal. The frst meeting of the Shumia Club was held Saturday at the home of Mrs. Edwards. The regular order of business was dispensed with, re miniscences of the summer taking up the time of the meeting. Miss Sykes and Mrs. Evans were voted in as new members. After the usual light re freshments were served the club ad journed to meet with Mrs. Wigle on October 2. In thojadvertising pages of this issue will be seen the ads of O. C. Clajpool and company of this city. ! The Journal is in a position to knew how the basis for the prices quoted on these articles was arrived at, and we know farther that it is impossi ble to get the same brands and quality of goods at a less price any where. If there has ever been a sufficient excuse for buying goods at other points, said excuse is now removed, and the man who sends his good money away from Prine ville this fall for groceries and hard ware has a grudge at himself.' The prices by other Prineville mechants in other lines of mechandising are qiute close also, and the entire wants of any family in the county can be supplied in this town at prices that can not be excelled anywhere. A special sermon to young men will be preached on Sunday at 7.30 at the Methodist church. All are in vited. The body of McLean Newsom who died at the Home Hospital the last of the week, was shipped to Seattli for burial. Newsom was a man oi about 40 years of ape, and lived for a time near Powell Butte. Following are the hours for the, Methodist church for the coming months. Sunday School 10, preach ing at 11 and 7.30, Ephworth League at 6.45. Prayer meeting Thursday evenings at 7.30. E. C. Newham, pas tor. Superintendent J. E. Myers recent ly completed the mailing of outlines for the use of pupils throughout the county in eighth grade work, in history, grammar and civil govern ment. These outlines will be of great value to the students, will make the work of every eighth grade student in the country uniform, and will prepare them for the first year in high school. The diagrams arc ex haustive, and show a great amount of work in the superintendent's office for which he is entitled to due credit. The DeMoss family who will give an entertainment at the Methodist church in this city tomorrow nitrht, have traveled over many of the countries of the globe, and have given numerous entertainments in all of them,. They are a family who makes their home in Oregon, have a natural talent for clean m usic and abilities thatare equaled by few in a'musical way. At an exhibition given by them at Madras a few nights ago, was pronounced marvel ous. The entertainment will start promptly at eight. If they draw a crowd as they have in the past when appearing in Prinevlle, the fiouse will be crowded to the doors. J. F. Blanchard and wife returned from a trip to Salem where J, F. was a delegate in the O & C land grant conference. The trip was made in the Blanchard Studcbaker, and i the party left Prineville one morn ing, ate supper at Oorvallis with relatives in the evening, and break fast in Salem the next morning. The roads over the Cascades were good. Returning they came up the Colum bia highway, and pronounce tht a fine road. From The Dalles the trip was made across Wascoe county to Shaniko which Required a day and a half over horrible roads. From Shaniko to Prineville the roads were in excellent condition, and the run was made in just three hours. Bell of Tumalo died at the Home Hospital yesterday after noon from a strike of paralysis. She was 41 years of age and had been a resident of Crook County since 1904. She is survived by her father, J. M. Siry of Tumalo, D. M. Siry, a brother of Milton, Husband. John B. Bell of Tumalo and Miss Elda Bell, daughter, who was the prose cuting witness in the sensational case in court this week. Although his health has been poor for some time, complications developed dur ing the excitement of the trial in which his daughter played so sensa tional a part, and a weak heart could not withstand the conditions. ; The body of both of these parties will be shipped to Tumalo by the father of Mrs. Bell for burial.
