What will be your? contribution toward it this jear? A fair is n institution that belongs to tbe public, one that is made or killed by a favorable or adversed public sentiment. There is in many eommimities, the feeling among some of the residents, that the fair is an institution born of an amagina tiw groupe of individuals, some of whom have a personal axe to grind, mme with a misconception of the things really worth while in this world. It is something stated by an iadividuat that he is under no obli gations to the fair and will not make an exhibit or attend unless the weather is at its best, political con ditions are right, which is to say Vis particuar party is in power, and his Ever is in good working order. This type of individual is not a good citizen. He belongs to the class that are ac liability andjnot an asset to the-community in which he lives. Tbe typical county fair, which is a small edition of the state fair where it is properly conducted, is an institution builded up about the spirit etthe thanks giving day, C(.m-ingal-ray&ift somewhat the same season, and' is a time and place for all whohave'goodred blood in their veins to congregate, bring their best stock 2 samples of their best crops, and place-them upon exhibition for the heraent o their neighbors and the strangers who happen to be ncar- by;- Ereiy successful fair board or management spend manyweary hoors planning and working out said aJans, work for which they never get any pay and would of ourse not except pay. Their interests are no greater than yours, and now that the fair is upon us, we ask, in the name of this board, that everyone make it a buisness (o the next three weeks to get after this fair, boost, work, talk, and think, and you will see the best fair that has ever been held in this county, by an easy 110 percent. The board has done everything that four honest, earnest, indutrious men can do. All plans are well and thoroughly laid. There is nothing about the matter that is not well provided for. So far the board has done all the work that has been done or been needed. For the next three weeks the burden shifts largely to the shoulders of the community, the people. They have made many promises, and we have great faitln in them. Will you come out, bring your best stuff, and make the fair the banner event of its kind, the best anyone has ever seen? We will look for you at the fair. It is up to you. HELP YOURSELF. It is but one of the laws of nature that a man will do the things that will benefit him most, financially or otherwise, other conditions being equal. Another famous law is to the effect that an individual is liable to form habits, and what he does at one time, which under the conditions then prevailing is best for him, he may persist in doing long after that said habit commences to injure him physically or financially. No, this is not a temperance lecture. It is a little talk on home finance. During the coming weeks, many of the good people will, and many more of them should, buy a supply ' of groceries and other things that will be used to answer for the win ter months. The Journal has been critcized somewhat for the articles, that have aDDeared in these columns from time J to time about buyingjat home. We know, and most of the people of this community are beginning to "see also, that it is to the best'interest of all 'that the money bejspent in the home town, which in this caseisPrineville I You will be able to see by looking over the prices that appear in the ads in this paper from time to time that new conditions are prevailing here. Of course there is no secret of the fact that at one time prices in this town were unreasonably high. But this is not true now. Give the local man a chance on that bill, and if he is too high, tell him so to his face like a man, and if ho is en titled to the buisness, give it to him. We think you know that is right, and it wil cause a better fueling all around. There is some talk about what Prineville will do for revenue after January 1, when the saloons are closed. Oncej before this same question was put up to the city, with a levy of sixjmills.jand a'con siderablc debt. J. B. Shipp, as chair man of the finance committee of the city council solved the problem, and paid off the debt Jthe first of the year. Anyone who doubts these statements are requested to look up the facts, from the city record. Live Wire Club meets every week now. More members all the time, every fellow with his shoulder to the wheel, and things commencing to move right. There were three knockers in Prinville ten years ago. One moved away, (to Bend, I think it was) , another'died and the third goes to bed every Thursday night at 6:00 and covers up his head. Early rains will enable the farmer to do fall plowing. Fall plowing means better crops and prosperity to the farmer and the farmer is the producing man of the nation. Let it rain. Fine rain, wasn't itTManager Schee (pronounced Skec), made arrangements with the weather man to have it sent this week instead of October, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Smart man, Schee.
