The fall of Przemysl (luring the pout

eastern Gallcla, and has released the

It la probable, however, that the first
estimates were too high, and less than
100,000 meu were used on these opera
tion. The Russians were compelled to

The Dardanelles bombardment has
accomplished nothing of value during
the week to the attacking warships.
While there has been some fight
ing along the east Prussian frontier
and in Uukowina, the mountains of I
both the enst and the west are the I
scenes of the most important engage
ments at present.
In tho'Vosges the French, after a
long tight, the position changing hands
more than once, bave finally establish
ed themselves on the summit of Hart
mann'sW'ellerkopf. a mountain petik
15 niilea northwest of Mculhauaen and
a few miles north of Thann. This Is
considered an Important success, as It
gives the French command of a con
siderable amount of country occupied
by the Germans. The fight for the
position has been a bitter one, and has
been going on for many days.
On the western front, USyond the
French success In the Vosges, where
the Germans abandoned a large quan
tity of material and left numerous
dead on the ground, there have been
no events of Importance, neither side
apparently being ready as yet for the
big effort which everybody has been
expecting. There have been the usual
bombardments of the positions and
mine w arfare and the aviators on both
sides have shown much actlvivty.
Holland's request for an explanation
from Germany of the sinking of the
Medea and tho capture of two other
Dutch steamers Is creating much In
terest In diplomatic circles, where it
is pointed out that the vessels of other
neutral countries bave not been molested.
