WHY A SOLDIER?
It is a notable and refreshing fact
that in Canada it is impossible for
a man to offer his services for the
army without written consent from
his wife.
Of course no man with properly
developed faculties would think of
avoiding military duty, were the
Jives and homes of his family in
'rolved, but there has perhaps boon
no conflict during the past fifty
years, in which such issues were at
stake.
That society will spend thousands
of dollars in the prosecution and
execution of a man to avenge the
death of another individual member
of society, and at the same time
view with favor and incouraging
comment on the business and indus
try of spending what seems to be
limitless millions on the wholesale
taking of millions of lives on what
is often but a fancied grievance.
It has been truthfully said the
band that rocks the cradle is the
hand that rules the world. Were it
not for the fact that any man with
a uniform trimmed in brass buttons
is a hero in the eyes of all female
society, the entire business of war
would assume a different appearance
to the young men of the entire
world. In this as in most other
affairs the wives and mothers of
the country can and do exert more
influence, either good or bad, than
they realize. We know that' such
expressions are not. popular at pres
ent, yet we offer the prediction that
wholesale murder and individual
deeds of the same character will be
viewed alike during the coming
years; justifiable only in the actual
protection of life, or more plainly,
;n self defense.
CLEAN UP-WEEK.
The governor has set aside a week
early in May, as clean up week.
Many of the towns of the state have
already acted on the suggestion,
and issued a like proclamation, and
some of our neighbors have already
celebrated the event and Redmond
is announcing the town as clean as
a pin. in uena, the city council
supplied wagons for hauling awuy
the rubbish. It is Prineville's move
Let's get together and make it
go right.
TWO BIG ATTRACTIONS
AT LYRIC NEXT WEEK
THE CITY PARK.
It is high time that work should
be started on the city park. The
heaviest part of the preparation of
the park has been completed and it
will take but little effort and capital
to make a very nice park, one that
will be a credit to any town. At
the last meeting of the city council,
it was suggested that an artesian
well be drilled by the city in the
park. It is possible that a well that
will supply fountains and the like
could be drilled at a low cost for
such wells, and it seems that a flow
of some strength could be had with
out question.
Whatever is done in the way of
planting roses and other shrubbery
sjust be done soon.
On Monday, April 5, the Ladies'
Glee Club, under the direction, of
Miss Blanche E. Williams, will ren
der a merry musical program at the
Lyric Theatre, consisting of tuneful
glees, chorouses, songs and special
ties, assisted by the Lyric orchestra.
Four special numbers deserve par
ticular mention, viz. "Back to
Panama", a honeymoon trip for
four couples. In a Japanese Gar
den, with Miss Omit Taoku and
Geisha Girls. "Then" and "Now",
a classy duo, who are the latest ex
ponents of the erpichorean art, and
"Ship Ahoy!" a rousing finale.
The ladies have aptly named this
attraction the "Follies of 1915,"
and those who remember their simi
lar entertainment of a year ago
may vouch for the coming event.
Beautiful color effects will be used
in some of the specialties. In all, a
two-hour entertainment of music,
songs, solos, glee club chorouses,
specialties and pictures, is promised.
Reserved seats are now on sale at
the Lyric Theatre. The other
attraction, which demands attention
is the film version, "Tesss of the
Storm Country, with Mary Pick
ford, America's most popular
screen actress, in the role of Tess."
This picture is the third Paramount
program to be presented at the
Lyric, and will be shown Wednes
day, April 7, seats reserved. The
story of Tess, with her quaint phil-
osphy of life, humorous and pathetic,
presents one of the most power
ful character sketches ever conceiv
ed. Patrons who wish choice seats,
are urged to speak for them early,
as the tremendous popularity of
this picture, wherever shown, makes
safe the prediction that some may
be disappointed in'norbeing able to
see this play.

Why does seventy-five per cent
f the mail for Prineville lie at
Redmond fourteen hours every day
before it comes on into Prineville?
The answer is easy. Prineville has
never gone out for a better mail
service, and naturally the postofficej
department is satisfied if Prineville
fc.
Investigation discloses the fact
that approximately three-fourths of
the mail that comes to Redmond for I
this point arrives there on the even-'
nig train, and under the present1
arrangement, this mail lies at that
point until the arrival of the morn
ing train. A united effort by the
business people and citizens of Prine
ville would without question, secure
a twice-a-day service.
The question ramains, why not?
