from Memel with heavy losses. The

Memel, a city on the Baltic In Prus
sia, was occupied by the Russians and
was recaptured by the Germans,
Sharp street fighting occurred before
the Germans occupied the city.
Not only have the RuBBlans been
driven from Memet, the German port
on the Baltic but they have been
thrown back violently 12 miles across
their own frontier, Krottlugen, In the
Russian province of Kovno, has been
occupied by Germans.

taining clearance papers, was stopped

to the harbor by two shots across her
bows from a five-Inch gun and direct
shots from a Maxim. She then return
ed and was taken In charge by the col
lector of customs.
' Permission to sail wns refused the
Odenmald by the collector, pending
Instructions from Washington. The
steamer has been at San Juan since
August 6. Bhe was bound for Euro
pean ports from the West Indie with
freight and passenger and (ought

Berlin, via Amsterdam. An official
statement announced that the German
casualties during the recent fighting
with British and Krench troops at
Neuve Chapelle were ouly 6000. The
British war office had estimated these
losses at 18,000.
Peace Treaty With Russia Made.
Washington. Ratifications of the
Peace Commission Treaty between the
United States and Russia were ex
changed by Secretary Bryan and
George Bakhmeteff, the Russian am
bassador. Fifteen Buch treaties now
are In force.
Gun Roar Break Mind.
London. Driven Insane by their ar
tillery fire, 800 German Infantrymen
were removed to an asylum near Alx
le Chapelle after the battle of Neuve
Chapelle, according to a dispatch from
Amsterdam.
Bavarian Crown Prince Wounded.
London. Crown Prince Rupprecht
of Bavaria has been seriously wounded
by a shell, according to the Dally Tel
egraph's Boulogne correspondent.

Washington. A large falling off In
