CUCUMBER DISEASES.
Injuria Ar Du to 4vrl Distinct
Trouble.
' There have ceme to tbe department
f aprk-ulture this year an onusual
Bomber of reports and complaints of
losses to cucumber growers from
Il4hrs of foilajte or fruit, particularly
Id. certain north central states, where
pickle crowing Is an Important indus
try. Ttte Injuries have proved upon In
vestigation to be doe to one or another
f several distinct troubles-blighting
f the foliage by downy mildew or an
thracnose, diseases which have al
eadj proved controllable by spraying
with bordeaux mixture; to the bac
terial wilt, a disease the cause of
which la known and for which a reme
y is being sought; to the ptctle spot,
a disease of sporadic occurrence and

to a disease of still' unknown nature
called white pickle.
Those troubles not already worked
nt are being Investigated by the state
experiment stations in Wisconsin.
Michigan and New York and by the
Tolled States department of agricul
ture, and a plan hi being formulated
Jointly by these Institutions to carry
aid to the growers in case of a recur
rence of the diseases next year.
It will nave to be proved by erperi-
mvents whether or not spraying will be
generally profitable. The department
f agriculture points oat to the farm
ers that a long rotation of crops Is an
important precaution, which should be
practiced by all. There is no evidence
that these diseases are spread through
the seed.
Apples For Winter Us.
Apples for winter use are usually
stored in an underground cellar or In
an outdoor pit. says J. C Wbltten of
the Missouri station. If a cellar is
ased it must be well ventilated, but
kept above freezing. In the fall it Is
best to open the ventilators at night
and close them during the warmer
aaya. Trap all water drains to pre
vent the loss of cold air. If the out
door pit Is used heap up the apples on
the surface of the ground on a well
drained spot and cover with straw. As
old weather approaches put a thin
layer of earth over the straw. Later
thicken the covering of earth so ai to
prevent freezing.
MARKET GARDENING.
Celery intended for the fall and
tarly winter trade should now be well
bauked almost to the top of the plants.
High ridging is a great protection In
ease of bard freezing.
If the celery is to be stored for win
ter use or sale It Is customary not to
blanch It so thoroughly in the field be
eanse unbluncbed plants bold up bet
ter In storage. It la necessary, how
ever, to store green varieties under
traditions which are favorable for
olaneblng If this has not been accom
plished in the field. If storing is de
ferred until late In November and the
rop Is placed in trenches the weather
ay be so cool that new root growth
tnnnot be encouraged, and without
root growth thorough blanching Is im
possible. The celery grower should
bear In mind that blanehhig Is accom
plished by causing the plant to grow
in tie absence of light, and of course
if there is no root growth there eannot
be top growth.
There are a great many methods, of
toting celery. It Is not as Important
lor the grower to know methods as
tba fundamental principles Involved lu
tte operation. Tbey may be enumer
ated as follows: (1) The tops should be
free from dew and rnln when stored.
(?) The plants should not be allowed
to wilt during the Interval between
harvesting and storing. (31 Hard free
to of the plants in storage may result
In the entire loss of the crop. (4i High
temperatures while the crop Is In stor
age should be avoided because they In

TREATING SEED CORN.
Two Convtmtnt Methods Suggested by
Illustrations.
(Prepared by United Stairs dprtmnt of
agriculture.
A good way to treat seed corn Im
mediately after gathering o that It
will keep dry and keep from mildew
ing until It ta to be used In the spring
I shown In the accompanying Illus
tration. The husked ears are placed
In a dry storehouse the same day the
seed corn Is gathered aud are hung by
binder twine from a pole or rafter.
METHOD OF TBEATI50 SEED COEX.
As tbey must be placed in such a man
ner that they do not touch each other,
they are attached to the atring about
four inches apart, as shown In the il
lustration. Fifteen or twenty ears can
be arranged on one string. Ordinarily
the best place to bang these strings Is
in an open shed or loft.
The ears of seed corn will also dry
successfully on a permanent rack, such

as is shown In the second Illustration.
If possible this rack should be located
where It Is both dry and breezy.
Care must be taken If a fire is used
to help dry out the seed ears. Heat
employed In a poorly veDtllated room
will do the corn more barm than good.
Only during unusually damp weather
at seed gathering time should a fire be
necessary, and then It should be slow,
long continued and situated below the
seed ears, with good ventilation above
them.
Legumes For Nitrogen.
The legumes as a source of nitrate
are Hither too slow In action to give
real Immediate profits when used to
produce greut money crops." This is
the statement made by an advocate of
the use of nitrate of soda on American
soils.
8uch a statement should not lead
my one away from the main fact that
legumes grown with other crops In a
Held benefit those other crops the first
year. The second year the soil Itself
Is much better from having grown the
legumes than If nitrate of soda bad
been used and no legumes grown.
Legumes nre our nntiral nitrate pro
ducers. Tho nitrogen Is cheaper, too,
when furnished os In this form. And
yet we should remember sodium ni
trate for Ita value In getting quick re
sults. It Is beneficial to almost every
crop when opplled In the right amounts
and at the right time, for quick re
sults when starting a pasture on poor
land, as an application to orchard soil
for hastening fruit. In market gardens,
where crops demand much nitrogen,
and In many oilier places sodium ni
trate Is Indispensable 8nnh crops as
potatoes, garden and truck crops
grown In colder sections need quick
acting nitrates In addition to legume
nitrogen to push the crops before the
organic source Is ready
Cut on the average extensive farm
let us depend largely upon the legume.
