The Stock Men
In the personnel of its member
ship, the state association of cattle
and horse raisers presents some of
the most able men, not only in
these lines, but in all other lines of
industry.
The president and father of the
organization is Wm. Poilman of
Baker City. Mr. Poilman is presi-j
dent of the First National Bank of
Baker, on the board of directors of
the Baker Loan & Trust Co.; inter
ested in other banks in FendSeton,
The Dalles and Portland; is first
vice-president of the Oregon Life
Insurance Company, and has large
land holdings besides the cattle
interests in which he is interested
Mr. Duby of Baker, treasurer of
the Association, is manager of the
Baker Packing Company, who own
five meat markets where retail busi
ness is carried on besides the whole
sale packing interests of the com
pany which are extensive.
Wm. Daughtry, second vice-presl
dent of the Association is president
of e Portland Union Stock Yards,
besides having large numbers of
cattle on the ranges of Malheur
county. '
S. 0. Correll, secretary, has an
extensive law business in Baker,
where he has been located for the
past 24 years. Besides acting as
secretary for the Association, Mr.
Correll is depended upon for legal
advice, and to his efforts much of
the success of the organization is
due.
The Tiuth About Rabies
The address of Calvin S. White,
of the state board of health, which
is quite fully treated in this issue,
is the most valuable information
obtainable on rabies.
One should consider that Dr.
White is perhaps as well versed in
this matter as anyone can be, and
his opinion on the various features
of the situation here cannot be
questioned. I
He says that the situation here in I
Crook County will be ever so much ;
worse before it is any better and ;
that every possible precaution should ;
be taken to check the disease. j
Keep this copy of the Journal for j
future reference and if there are'
any matters you do not understand, !
telephone this office. Dr. White1
has promised a supply of bulletins j
that will cover every possible feature '
of the situation, and this informa
tion is yours for the asking.
coveting the cooperative purchase
of farm seeds and farmers' organ
izations. Mr. Lovett has already
been of great assistance to a large
number of the farmers in this
county along this line, and through
proper organization, expects to be
able to save the farmers thousands
of dollars during the coming year.
By combining so as to be able to
order in carload lots, a great saving
can be effected to the farmers and
also they can secure varieties of
seeds which they need and which
are not always carried by the local
dealers. Those who have heard Mr
Lovett know that he always has
something good to offer, and we
know this instance will be no ex-
ception'to the rule.
At the same meeting we will hear
from Mr. Harold Crawford, of
Walla Walla, Wash., a man whiflhas
had considerable experience in the
use of'silos and their construction,
and aho will deliver a talk along
these lines. There is a fine field for
silos in this section, and we trust
that all who are able will get in to
hear this talk.
After the talk by these men, it is
hoped to organize for the purpose
of buying seeds and anything else !
which may seem to be of benefit to !
the farmers- Also the question of
a farmers' cooperative warehouse
will probably be discussed at this
time to see if any feasible method
can be adopted whereby the ware
house can be rebuilt. Since the
burning of the farmers' warehouse
its value to the community has been
impressed upon the farmers more
strongly every month and it is hoped
that some definite plan can be pro
posed for its reconstruction. The
meeting will be held at Ehret's hall
and a large attendance is expected.

Farmers' Meeting at Redmond
A meeting of the farmers of
Crook County has been arranged for
at Redmond to take place at one
o'clock, Saturday afternoon, Feb
ruary 13. At this meeting Mr, C.
M, McAlister, special representative
of the Portland Union Stock Yard3
m., will give a talk relative to the
hog problem which confronts the
farmers today, and we believe that
he will have a great many helpful
suggestions to offer. Mr. McAlister
has had a'great deal of experience
in both the raising and selling of
stock, and thoroughly understands
the general conditions. The hog
question is one which we know is
puzzling a great many of our farm
ers at the present time, and we be
lieve that a talk from a man of Mr.
ir .. ' 1
McAlister s experience will be of
great benefit.
Mr. A. E. Lovett, our County
.Agriculturist, will also give a talk
