Events Occurring Throughout
the State During the Past
Week.
r Want Jitney Busses Regulated.
Salem. Asserting that the Portland
traction company (a losing more than
?500 daily by the operattonof jitney
busses In the congested districts of
Tortland. Attorney Harrison Alien is
in the state capital conferring with
the railroad commission, preparatory
to having a bill Introduced which will
curb the operations of these vehicles.
It is said that among the features
of the proposed measure for relief
will be a clause putting the jitney bus
under the jurisdiction of the railroad
commission. The bill also requires
all such vehicles to be licensed and
will provide for the filing of an in
demnity bond in the case of every one
In operation.
BRIEF NEWS OF OREGON
Copperfield Will Remain "Dry" Town.
Baker. The city council of Copper
field has been reorganized, following
the proclamation by Governor Withy
combe suspending martial law, in
force for over one year, since the raid
of the saloons and confiscation of li
quor and fixtures by the militia, on
order of Governor West J. H. Dauer,
merchant, has been named mayor,
while other members of the council
are ex-Mayor Stewart, William Wie
gand, former saloon man, and one wo
man, Mrs. L. Benham.
It is announced that the new coun
cil will not issue any liquor licenses,
but will keep Copperfield in the "dry"
column.
Survey for Canal is On.
Seaside. Under authorization of
the Port of Astoria commissioners, a
crew of surveyors is making a com
plete survey of the territory between
Seaside and the Columbia river, with
a view toward locating a steamboat
canal. The Columbia Clatsop Canal
club has taken the initiative in the
project and the action of the port
commissioners is in response to a re
quest from the club.
$3,000,000 OF TIMBER SOLD
Shevlin Interests Buy 60,000 Acres of
Yellow Pine at Bend.
Portland. The largest sale of tim
ber land made in the Pacific North
west in several years has just been
closed by the Deschutes Lumber com
pany, with headquarters at Bend, with
the Shevlin lumber interests of Min
neapolis, Minn., aggregating 60,000
acres and involving a consideration,
it is understood, of approximately $3,
000,000. T. L. Shevlin is the principal
factor In the deal for the Shevlin in
terests. With the purchase of this tract, the
Shevlin interests now own a body of
yellow pine timber in central Oregon
of about 180,000 acres. They have
been investing in Oregon timber lands
for a number of years.
The tract just taken over by the
Shevlins adjoins their other holding!.
The tract lies in the western part of
Crook county and. the northern part
of Klamath county. The extreme east
era portion of the timber is within
five miles of Bend and railroad trans
portation. With this proximity to
transportation it will not require
much new railroad construction to
tap the first unit of the holdings when
actual operations are started.
$620,000 Involved in Timber Suits.
Portland. Alleging that Fred A.
Kribs and W. N.-Jones, of the J. K.
Lumber company, deliberately de
frauded E. H. Dodge and the E. H.
Dodge Lumber company, wrecking the
company and bankrupting Mr. Dodge,
Robert Stennick, trustee in bankrupt
cy has filed suit against Kribs and
Jones for $620,464.31, alleged lost by
Mr. Dodge in the transaction. The
fraud Is alleged to have been commit
ted by misrepresentation of timber
values and of facts connected with
the establishment of a logging rail
road in Skamania county, Washington.
Valley Southern Sets Service Schedule
Oregon City. Passenger and freight
service on the Willamette Valley
Southern will begin January 30. A
schedule of rates and a tentative time
table have been submitted to the rail
table have been submitted to the rail
oad commission and a decision from
that body is expected in a few days.
The operation of trains during the
first month of service will be largely
experimental and a permanent sched
ule arranged on information secured
Jn February.
Rufus Thompson Dies at Albany.
Albany. Rufus Thompson, for many
years one of Albany's best-known res
idents and father of W. Lair Thomp
son, president of the Oregon state sen
ate, died at his home in thla city at
the ago of 73 years. He had been a
resident of Linn county continuously
tor 45 year.
A camp of Spanish-American war
veterans has been organized at Hills
boro. Portland's sixth annual automobile
show opened at the armory Saturday
night.
The Oregon State Federation of La
bor convened Monday In Salem, T.
H. Burchard presiding.
E. J. McClanahan of Eugene has
been reelected president of the Ore
gon State Poultry association.
Temporary organization of the Lane
County Jersey Breeders' association
was effected at a meeting at Eugene.
The district forester at Portland re
ports that in the season of 1914 there
were 1300 fires in the national forests
of Oregon, Washington and Alaska.
After a shut-down of several months
the big mill of the J. H. Chambers
Lumber company, of Cottage Grove,
has resumed operations with a full
crew.
Blasius Grassor, who shot Elmer
Bacon, a 16 year-old boy, on January
4, was found guilty of manslaughter
by a jury at Salem, after a delibera
tion of six hours.
J. W. Groshong, of Albany, was
elected president of a newly organ
ized Hopgrowers' Association of Linn
and Bonton counties, and Roy New
port, also of Albany, was elected sec
retary. .
JVilliara D. Scott, general manager
of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle
railway died at his home in Portland.
The end came after repeated attacks
of heart failure thut brought about
complications.
Portland's population is 275.735, or
gain of 6208 in 1914, according to
estimates based on the number of
names that the new city directory will
contain when it is Issued February 25
by R. L. Polk & Co.
Ex-Governor West during the last
30 days of his administration condi
tionally pardoned 69 convicts, six of
them murderers, and two convicted of
manslaughter, according to records on
file in the statehouse.
No fatal accidents were reported to
Labor Commissioner Hoff during the
week. The total number of mishaps
was 38, and 12 occurred among em
ployes of railroads, while 9 victims
were employed by sawmill or logging
companies.
John Johnson, of Portland, aged
about 50 years, was found dead by his
brother Albert, between Tualatin and
Mulloy stations, in the southeastern
part of Washington county, death hav
ing resulted from a shotgun wound
near the heart.
T. J. Williams, chief of police of
Roseburg, was acquitted by a jury in
the state court following a hearing on
a charge of assaulting George Church,
a socialist. Mr. Williams' arrest was
the outcome of an I. W. W. outbreak
which occurred Saturday night.
J. T. Richardson, chief auditor of
the state accounting department un
der the administration of State In
surance Commissioner Ferguson, has
announced that the cost of auditing
the books of the various counties,
Multnomah not included, was $19,281.
The skeleton of a large whale which
drifted ashore just north of the mouth
of the Sius'.aw river last summer is
to be taken to Eugene. James Ful
lerton, of Eugene, is at Florence to
superintend the work and says the
skeleton will be put together on the
university campus.
The total road mileage In Oregon
is 37,639 miles.

total mileage of macadam road Is 92
miles, of gravel road 3745 miles, of
plank road 232 miles and of earth road
32,689 miles.
State Veterinarian Lytle, who is
secretary of the Livestock Sanitary
board, announced that the department
had expended $25,125.99 of the appro
priation for two years of $50,000. The
expenditure was for 18 months. Cat
tle tuberculosis inspection numbered
13,321; malleln Inspection, 2311, and
sheep inspected, 400,000.
With every appointment and feature
In accord with the occasion, The Dal
les business men entertained the offi
cials of the Oregon-Washington Rail
road & Navigation company at an
elaborate banquet at Hotel Dalles Sat
urday. The affair was a token of ap
preciation of what the railroad heads
have done for The Dalles.
Four singers from the Oregon Agri
cultural college will leave Corvallis
this week for an extended tour of the
east as the guests of the Santa Fe
railroad. The quartet will appear first
at San Francisco, and from there will
journey east as far as Chicago, giv
ing concerts en route and Binding on
the de luxe trains on Santa Fe lines.
The tour will last about four weeks.
The total amount of the fees re
ceived by the automobile department
of Secretary of State O'.cott's office
for the year ending December 31 was
C77.592, as compared with $50,873 in
1)13 and $42,994 in 1912. The motor
vehicle registrations totaled 16.347,
motorcycles 2898, dealers 110 and
chauffeurs .1838. In 1913, 13,957 mo
tor vehicle and motorcycle registra
tions were made.
