CHRISTMAS SONG.
By EDMUND HAMILTON SEARS.
Calm on the listening ear of night
Corns heaven'e melddioua straina
Where wild Judea stretches far
Her silver mantled plains)
Celestial choirs from courts above
Shed leered glories there,
And angels with their sparkling lyres
Make musio on the air.
The answering hills of Palestine
Send back ths glad reply
And greet from all their holy heights
Ths day apring from on high.
O'er the blue depths of Gables
There cornea a iiolier calm,
And Sharon waves in solemn praise
Her silent groves of palm.
"Glory to God!" Tha lofty atrain
The realm of ether fills.
How sweeps ths song of solemn joy
O'sr Judah's rnored hillsl
"Glory to Codl" The sounding skies
Loud with their anthems ring.
"Peace on the earth, good will to men,
From heaven's eternal King."
Light on thy hills, Jerusalem!
Tha Saviour now la born.
Mors bright on Bethlehem's Joyoua
plains
Breake the first Christmas morn,
And brighter on Morish's brow,
Crowned with her temols soires.
Which first proclaim the newborn light,
Clothed with ita orient tires.
Thla day shall Christian lipa bs mute
And Christian hearts be cold?
Oh, oatoh the anthem that from heaven
O'sr Judah's mountains rolled
When nightly burst from seraph harpa
The high and solemn lay,
"Glory to Godi on earth be peace)
Salvation comes today I "
A Prayer For Christmas.
Almighty God. we give thee thanks
for the mighty yearning of tne human
heart for the coming of a Saviour and
the constant promise of thy word that
he waa to come. In our o n souls we
the humble sighs and panting
aspirations of ancient men and ages

him who comes to bring God to man
ud man to God. We bless thee for
he trlbnte that we can pay to blm
from onr sense of need and depend
ence and that our own hearts can so
answer from their wilderness the cry.
'Prenare ve the way of the Lord." In
us the rough places are to be made
smooth, the crooked straight, the
mountains of pride brought low and
the valleys of despondency lifted up.
O God, prepare thoo the way Id us
now, and may we welcome anew thy
holy child! Hosannal Blessed be be
wbo cometh in the name of the Lord.
