philanthropic disposition. There is
always a motive behind the movement"
Now will the News please state
the motives that are behind the
Madras business men? Does Mad
ras want to be a county seat?
Would some Madras people like to
hold office? Why not? If Jeffer
son county is cut off Madras is the
logical county seat and naturally
she is willing to work for it.
But why impugn the motives of
"four or five business men of Prine-
ville who are working so hard
against the indicated wish of the
majority of the county that it shall
be divided?" According to the
News way of thinking our citizens
have not public spirit enough, or
honesty of purpose, to go out and
work for that which seems best to
them. To the mind of the News
editor there is an ulterior purpose
to accomplish.
We would like to ask if the busi
ness men of Prineville have not the
same right to work for their town
as either Madras or Bend?
Again the News goes-on to say
"Some of these men are in a busl
iicsa mat win necessitate the es
tablishment of other offices in the
new counties if they cover the same
field of operation as now. Others
of the opposition have received con
siderable county business which is
all right from their business stand
point. The division of the county
means the breaking up of the sup
port of certain political alliances
which might result in some of the
county business falling into other
hands. These men, from a selfish
business standpoint, are justified in
opposing county division."
The implication of the above
paragraph does a great injustice to
the standing and integrity of some
of our public spirited citizens. To
insinuate that the division of the
county means the breaking up of
the support of certain political
alliances which might result in some
of the county business falling into
other hands, requires, in justice
to the county court and merchants
indicated, that the News publish
the facts upon which such an ac
cusation is based. Let us have the

cut are ALL the people of
Crook county to suffer, as they
have during the past few years,"
innocently asks the News, "just be
cause a re-arrangement of affairs,
according to the wish of the people,
might blight the POLITICAL aspira
tions of one small community, or,
because it may open the county
business according to law, or, be
cause it may interfere with indi
vidual political plans of three or
four persons?". More facts are
needed here. Show ua where all
this Buttering is. Tell us about
the political aspirations of one small
community. Amplify your state
ments with concrete "facts" that
jou talk so much about. Give us
"facts."
What do you mean by the state
ment, "it may open the county
business according to law, or, be
cause it may interfere with indi
vidual political plans of three or
four persons?" Here are insinua
tions that snould be cleared up.
The dissimination of such idiotic
drivel should not be allowed to go
on unchallenged. Produce your
"facts," Mr. Editor of the News,
so that this community may pass
judgment upon you. Some of the
business members thereof have
done so in the following resolutions:
To the people of Crook county in
general and to the people and
business men of Redmond in
particular:
Whereas, It has come to our at
tention that a rumor has been cir
culated that the business men of
Prineville have threatened to divert
trade and change their shipping
point from Redmond, unless the
people of that town "Lined up for
county division,'' and
Whereas, The Prineville News of
October 16th strongly insinuated
that "Only four or five" business
men of Prineville were opposed to
and working against county division
Now, Therefore, we, the under
signed, resent and denounce, un
qualifiedly, the said rumors, and
the said insinuations and statements
in the News as lies, pure and simple
and, moreover, we believe them to
have been circulated with malicious
intent.

Are you bettei off now than you

If yon believe in the principles
of the Republican party, if jou

are best for the country, then prove
it by voting for your standard

You know that under Republi

You know that under Democrat
ic presidents you have Democratic
times.
Remember the prosperity under

Kemember the conditions under

The issue in this campaign is
not one of personality. It is not
one of non-partisanship. It is a
question of whefher you prefer

Do you have enough work?
Are your wages good?
Is your business what you want

printed forms and warrants, etc.
They allow only $2500 for all ol
these items. Now any one can see
at a glance that this amount
would not properly tit up at leant
eight offices, pay for one year's
supplies in a manner that any
taxpayer would demand, as we all
want the records of our lands to be
secure and afe. We want our
prisoners secure and we should not
undertake to have a countv until
we can afford to pay for the
necessary items. Why, the sheriff's
office with jail would cent the
$2500 by itself. We feel safe in
stating that it would cott at leant
$15,000, and look at the difference
between that amount and $2500.
Jefferson budget has allowed
but $300 for her poor. Crook has
paid $6350 in eight months, esti
mate for 12 months would be
$1)525. Jefferson's one-third would
be $3175, or if they should only be
slotted one-fourth it would be
$2381 25, another underestimate.
They have omitted entirely
juvenile court, fruit inspector,
stock inspector, sealer of weights
and measures, insurance and
library which are small taken sep
arately but counted together they
amount to quite a sum. The
larger omissions are bounties,
county lairs, miscellaneous ac
count (in Crook it amounts to
about $4000 annually), water
master and fire patrol.
They advanced the argument
that with their own county they
would have their own representa
tive in the state legislature to help
them out on irrigation matters
and other matters of importance.
They did not seem to know that
under the Oregon Law we are
epresented in the state legislature
by a joint representative, who
represents four counties Crook,
Lake, Klamath and Grant
and it will be some time before
this condition changes, yet these
men undertake to divide up Crook
county and tell the people bow
much better they can do things
than our present county officers.
Do you think they have the ability
to do so?
We are informed that it is the
opinion of our circuit judge that if
Crook is divided into three coun
ties and they were to be added to
the present work of our circuit
judge it would take fourt en months
to do the work that should be done
in twelve months. This would
mean another circuit judge at an
ncrease of expense on all the
counties in the circuit.
