We're Destined to Write
Greater Music Than
Europeans
By GLENN D1LLARD CUNN, Chicago
Musical Critic
WE havo never got away from
tho idea that Europe poa
st'sog the only true knowl
edge of music. As a nnittor of fact,
wo are not a different raeo from
those of Europe, We ai'o just u
MODIl'IKD El'KOPEAN HACK,
and we are just now coining to have
a race consciousness. A popular
impression exists that the Latin and
Slavic and Teutonic count riea have
a liner musical consciousness than
those of tho Anglo-Suxon countries.
An analysis of folk songs of all na
tions will show that tho FOLK
S0XGS OF ENGLAND, IRE
LAND AND SCOTLAND ARE
AS FINE AS THOSE OF OTHER
LANDS. As for tho popular songs
of Russia and Italy, they aro not as
good as those of our popular mu
sical comedy.
AMERICANS ARE BEGINNING TO
CREATE AND RECREATE THEIR
OWN MUSIC OUT OF THE STUFF
OF THE NATIONAL LIFE. MUSIC,
ABOVE ALL OTHER ARTS, COMES
FROM WITHIN. GERMANY
WROTE GREAT MUSIC WITH ITS
BACK TO ITS FRONTIERS AND ITS
FACE TOWARD THE FIRESIDE.
WHEN WE SHALL HAVE STOPPED
LOOKING TO OTHER LANDS SO
MUCH AND MORE TO OURSELVES,
WE SHALL BE WRITING GREATER
MUSIC. WE ARE TODAV GOOD
JUDGES WHEN IT COMES TO
ANYTHING FOREIGN, OF WHICH
WE DEMAND THE BEST. BUT WE
ARE AFRAID TO JUDGE AMERI
CAN MUSIC ON ITS OWN MERITS.
YET 80ME OF IT IS BEING PRO
DUCED THAT IS AS GOOD AS
WHAT COMES FROM OTHER
SHOREl
