To meet the great problem of unemployment I would form colonies of three varieties. In the first I would put those who know the rudiments of skillful laboring and who at once may become producers in a communi ty. These men honestly want work and know how to work. They are kept from Jobs only by the fact that they cannot find any. In my second division col ony would be found men who do not know how to work and who must be taught the rudi ments of labor. They would have to be schooled in the art of using their hands and exer cising their wills. It would not be long before some of these men could be promoted into the first colony. Their promotion would be dependent upon their application. In the third colony I would put those who can work and who refuse to, preferring to prey upon the social fabric and flaunt Justice In the face. They would either work or starve. For this end we must be knit together in this work as one man. We must entertain each other In brotherly affection. We must be willing to abridge our selves of our superfluities for the supply of others' necessities. We must uphold a familiar com merce together in all meekness, gentleness, patience and liberal ity. We must delight in each other; make each other's condi tion our own; rejoice together, mourn together, always having before our eyes our commission and community in the work as members of the same body. So shall we keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. The Lord will be our God and make us a praise, and a glory, that men shall say of succeed ing plantations, "The Lord make it likely that of New England." John Winthrop, 1030. LONGING. Of all the myriad moods of mind That through the soul come thronging. Which one was e'er go dear, -so kind. Bo beautiful as longing? The tiling we long for that we are For one transcendent moment, Before the present, poor and bare. Can make its sneering com ment. Still through our paltry stir and strife Glows down the wished Ideal, And longing molds In clay what life Carves in the marble real. To let the new life In, we know, Desire must-ope the portal , Perhaps the longing to be so Helps make the soul Immortal.
